Waiting on Clowney? NFL mock draft forecast may change for Seahawks depending on free agency move

The Combine is over, NFL Free Agency is in its twilight and the NFL Draft is still going to go on as planned but will resemble more of a conference call than a league-produced spectacle.

For the Seattle Seahawks, what happens at the No. 27 pick may hang upon what happens with Jadeveon Clowney. Do the Seahawks have to go searching for another edge rusher, with or without Clowney in tow?

If Clowney does indeed return to Seattle, where I’d expect Seattle to go is the offensive line. With the exits they’ve had recently, it makes sense to load up here with some fresh talent.

Chad Rueuter: Joshua Jones (OL, Houston)

Charley Casserly: Curtis Weaver (LB, Boise State)

Lance Zierlein: Austin Jackson (OL, USC)

Almost a clean sweep across the board for Yetur Gross-Matos from Penn State but some added depth at WR with the speedy Tee Higgins from Clemson is also a solid pick.

Pete Prisco: Yetur Gross-Matos (Edge, Penn State)

Ryan Wilson: Yetur Gross-Matos (Edge, Penn State)

Chris Trapasso: Yetur Gross-Matos (Edge, Penn State)

Josh Edwards: Tee Higgins (WR, Clemson)

Tom Fornelli: Terrell Lewis (Edge, Alabama)

The Draft Network: Seahawks Picks Rounds 1-3

Here’s a look at what the Seahawks do in the first three rounds according to Jordan Reid from The Draft Network.

Round One: Yetur Gross-Matos (Edge, Penn State)

Round Two: Isaiah Wilson (OT, Georgia), Cameron Dantzler (CB, Mississippi State)

Round Three: Logan Stenberg (OL, Kentucky)

The Athletic: Three-round Seahawks mock draft

More defensive line help, but it’s not Penn State’s Gross-Matos. The Seahawks found it at TCU in the first round.

Round One: Ross Blacklock (DT, TCU)

Round Two: KJ Hamler (WR, Penn State)

Round Three: No Pick

ESPN: Yetur Gross-Matos (Edge, Penn State)

Here’s ESPN’s Mel Kiper’s assessment of the Seahawks pick.

This is a tough one for me because the Seahawks are still in the hunt to re-sign Jadeveon Clowney. If they spend a bunch of money to bring Clowney back, they might not want to spend the capital on an edge rusher here, particularly after drafting L.J. Collier in Round 1 last year. Still, the 6-foot-6, 266-pound Gross-Matos makes a lot of sense, because we know that Pete Carroll likes big defensive ends who could move inside and rush the passer on passing downs. Offensive tackle should be an option here, and Seattle also has an extra second-round pick.

Yahoo Sports: Seahawks Rounds 1-2 picks

A two-round mock draft? Ambitious and I like it. In the mock draft from Yahoo Sports, here is who Seattle takes with their two picks.

Round 1: Terrell Lewis (Edge, Alabama)

Round 2: Robert Hunt (OG, Louisiana-Lafayette), Jaylon Johnson (CB, Utah)

Bleacher Report: Marlon Davidson (DL, Auburn)

It’s not the pre-combine seven-round mock draft that was previously done, but Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller stays in line with what has been expected from the Seahawks if they stay in the No. 27 spot. Here’s what Miller has to say about the pick.

“Marlon Davidson at the end of Round 1 gives Seattle the push, penetration and power up front it likes in linemen. Davidson can play 5-technique all the way down to head-up on the center with his 6’3”, 303-pound frame and has proved on film and in workouts that he has the talent to be a Day 1 contributor.”
