Mariners MLB The Show Simulation (May 2): Tom Murphy homers again, but Houston picks up the win
MLB The Show 20 Simulation: May 2, 2020
Houston (15-12) vs. Seattle (10-24)
Seattle breaks their nine-game losing streak in dramatic fashion with a 4-3 win over Houston last night. Now the task becomes turning that dramatic win into two straight wins, something the Mariners have not done in the 2020 “virtual season” since beating Texas and Minnesota on March 29 and 30.
If you missed how Seattle defeated Houston in the first contest of the series, here’s a look.
Seattle’s challenge tonight is facing an undefeated Lance McCullers Jr., the Astros hurler has collected 39 strikeouts in 2020 so far and has an ERA of 2.97. The Mariners have been decent against left handed pitching so this matchup has the potential of making things very interesting if Seattle’s bats show up.
Tonight’s pitching matchup
Lance McCullers Jr. (HOU)
3-0 (2.97 ERA)
Vs.
Yohan Ramirez (SEA)
1-2 (7.06 ERA)
Game Highlights
-Despite giving up a triple to Houston’s Alex Bregman in the first inning, the Mariniers defense makes a few plays to hold him at 3rd, and keep the Astros off the scoreboard.
-Back to back hits by Daniel Vogelbach and Carlos Gonzalez gives Seattle runners in scoring position with no outs in the top of the second inning. Tom Murphy’s RBI groundout scores Vogelbach to open up tonight’s scoring but Seattle could not do any more damage in the inning. (Seattle 1-0)
-A Josh Reddick triple leads off the top of the third inning and after Garrett Stubbs groundout, Reddick scores and ties the game at one a piece. Ramirez does a great job to stop Houston’s offense from gaining momentum and retires the side.
-The Mariners get two quick outs in the top of the fourth inning but then a walk and a hit sets up Carlos Correa’s bases clearing double to give Houston the lead. (Houston 3-1)
-All Seattle needed was one swing of the bat to get the lead back. Tom Murphy’s second home run in as many days gives Seattle a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the 4th inning. (Seattle 4-3)
-Seattle’s bullpen does a great job...for the first two outs, after an Astros Double, George Springer’s double ties the game up at 4 in the top of the sixth inning. (4-4 Tie)
-It’s now Erik Swanson’s turn to stop Houston’s offense with two outs in the inning. Having just issued a full-count walk to Alex Bregman, Jose Altuve sends a high fastball deep and gives Houston the lead. (Houston 7-4)
Houston would push one more across and Seattle could not make things dramatic in the final three innings. Houston wins 8-4. Houston’s win puts them one win below .500 at 16-17, and Seattle now sits at 10-25.
