Seattle and South Sound soccer: Three area pro soccer teams take the field this weekend

On March 11, Gov. Jay Inslee announced a temporary restriction of gatherings of more than 250 people in King, Snohomish and Pierce Counties. Sporting events, like this Seattle Sounders FC match at the Seahawks’ home, CenturyLink Field in Seattle, will be particularly hard hit.

It is a big weekend for soccer teams in the South Sound.

While the Tacoma Defiance will play the first professional soccer game in the state of Washington since the state-wide shutdown began, the two other pro soccer teams in the region have big games as well.

In Utah, OL Reign have reached the knockout stage of the NWSL Challenge Cup. They will take on the Chicago Red Stars in the quarterfinal round. That game can be seen at 7 p.m. on CBS All Access.

If they win that game, they’ll play the winner of the Washington Spirit and Sky Blue FC on July 22, that game also can be seen on CBS All Access.

On the MLS side, Sunday night is perhaps the beginning of a pivotal sequence of events for the Seattle Sounders and their stay in the MLS is Back Tournament. Although the tournament has not reached the knockout stages, what happens between Seattle and Vancouver along with Chicago vs. San Jose could mean a lot depending on the Seattle result.

Currently, the Group B standings look like this

  1. San Jose Earthquakes (4 pts.)

  2. Chicago Fire (3 pts.)

  3. Seattle Sounders (1 pt.)

  4. Vancouver Whitecaps (0 pts.)

There are a ton of scenarios that hinge on Sunday’s games which you can read here. Seattle winning means one of the following will take place.

Seattle can advance with…

-A multi-goal win over Vancouver and San Jose loses to Chicago.

-Sounders win over Vancouver and the Chicago Fire lose their remaining games.

There are several other scenarios that could take place, however if you’re Seattle then these are the two best possible results you want to take place with a win.

Seattle and Vancouver can be seen on FS1 at 7:30 p.m.
