Seahawks add former WSU, Archbishop Murphy OT Abraham Lucas in 3rd round

Abraham Lucas was a standout two-way player for four seasons at Archbishop Murphy High School in Everett.

After he wrapped up his impressive high school career with a state title in 2016, he headed across the mountains to begin his college career at Washington State.

Lucas spent five years in Pullman, started 42 consecutive games at right tackle for the Cougars the past four seasons, and became a four-time selection to the All-Pac-12 team.

He’s excelled at every level he’s played at.

And he won’t have to travel far to begin the next chapter of his football career.

Lucas is on his way back to the Puget Sound region after being selected by the hometown Seahawks in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft on Friday evening.

He was the No. 72 overall pick — the same number he wore playing for the Cougars the past four seasons.

“It’s surreal,” Lucas, who watched the draft from Pullman, said on a conference call with reporters after he was selected by the team he grew up watching. “I’ve got a lot of emotions right now. I’m not really sure to place all of them.”

Lucas’ addition gives the Seahawks another proven option on the offensive line.

“Such a natural opportunity for a kid to play at home, and he expressed that right off the bat, about the family being close and all of that,” Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said. “It’s a good deal. So, he’ll be as motivated as you can get to make this work.”

Lucas played both sides of the ball for Archbishop Murphy — at tight end, later offensive tackle as a senior, and defensive end — during his four varsity seasons.

He helped pace the Wildcats to the Class 2A state semifinals twice, and his senior season in 2016 was key in guiding the program to an undefeated 14-0 season and its most recent state title.

Considered a four-star recruit in the 2017 class by 247Sports.com, Lucas was ranked as the No. 3 player in Washington — behind Graham-Kapowsin offensive tackle Foster Sarell (who signed with Stanford) and Juanita running back Salvon Ahmed (Washington) — the No. 18 offensive tackle in the class and No. 139 player nationally.

He signed with WSU. fter redshirting his first season in Pullman, Lucas made a significant impact in the Cougars’ high-flying offense the next four.

“I just was able to learn and just be like a sponge and soak everything up,” he said.

Lucas did not miss a game the past four seasons, starting all 42 for the Cougars at right tackle. That led to four selections to the All-Pac-12 team — including a first-team nod his senior season, and second-team nods each of the three previous seasons.

“I’m just a guy who likes to show up and do his job as best as he can,” Lucas said. “Simple as that. Don’t try to do anything super spectacular. Just do what you’re coached to do, and everything else will follow.”

Lucas was one of two former Archbishop Murphy standouts to be selected Friday, joining Huskies cornerback Kyler Gordon, who was selected by the Bears in the second round at No. 39 overall.

Lucas was also the second offensive tackle the Seahawks drafted in as many days.

With their highest pick since 2010 — when they also drafted an offensive tackle in Russell Okung — the Seahawks drafted Mississippi State left tackle Charles Cross at No. 9 overall in the first round Thursday night.

Earlier Friday, with consecutive picks in the second round at Nos. 40 and 41, they added Minnesota pass rusher Boye Mafe and Michigan State running back Kenneth Walker III.

Then, with their final pick of the evening, they called Lucas.

“I’m speechless to be honest,” Lucas said. “I’m just excited to continue to learn and get better with everything.”
