Tracking local golfers on the PGA Tour for July 19, 2015
This week: Barbasol Championship, Thursday through Sunday, RTJ Trail Grand National, Opelika, Alabama.
In the field: Olympia’s Andres Gonzales, University Place’s Andrew Putnam and Gig Harbor’s Kyle Stanley.
Fourth-round scores: Stanley shot an even-par 71, and Gonzales had a 1-over 72.
Positions: Stanley (9-under 275) tied for 23rd, and Gonzales (5-under 279) tied for 48th, both well behind winner Scott Piercy (19-under 265).
Recap: Stanley’s goal was to get into the top 10 to earn an exemption into this week’s PGA Tour tournament at the RBC Canadian Open, but a bogey at the 12th hole (tee shot at par-3 hole went long and into deep rough) really hurt his chances. And he bogeyed the par-5 16th hole later (approach shot went into pond). Still, the Bellarmine Prep graduate has made nearly $200,000 over the past month. … After a rough start, Gonzales battled back to even par on his round with back-to-back birdies at Nos. 13 and 14. And then on the next hole, he promptly hit the worst drive of the week so far left that it was never found. By the time he struck his first shot from the fairway at the par 4, it was his fifth shot. He made triple bogey. But at No. 16, he did make an eagle 3 (4-iron approach stopped 7 feet from the cup).
Next: Gonzales and both Putnam brothers (Andrew, Michael) are in the field for this week’s RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Ontario, Canada.
