The University of Puget Sound announced a new athletic director late last week. Chelsea Herman, who brings more than 20 years of college athletics leadership experience, will succeed Amy Hackett, who retired in December 2024 after serving in the role at the Tacoma university for 21 years.

“I am absolutely elated to be named the next Athletics Director at the University of Puget Sound and am honored, humbled, and energized to join this tremendously special community!” Herman wrote in a statement. “I would especially wish to thank President Crawford, Vice President Sarah Comstock, DeLaina Sarden, Moe Stephens, the search committee, and all others who played a part in this process.

“Puget Sound is a world-class institution because of its people, and I am excited and ready to work together to create transformative experiences and lasting impact. Go Loggers!”

Herman most recently served as the deputy athletics director and senior woman administrator at California State University, San Bernardino. Previously, Herman held leadership positions at Seattle University, where she served as assistant athletics director for compliance and senior woman administrator. There, she coordinated NCAA compliance programs and provided rules education for student-athletes, coaches, and staff.

“We are excited to welcome Chelsea to Puget Sound,” said Sarah Comstock, vice president for student affairs and dean of students. “Her collaborative and mission-driven leadership style, coupled with her deep understanding of collegiate athletics, will be instrumental in advancing our athletics program while maintaining our commitment to the transformative development of scholar-athletes, coaches, and staff.”

Jeff Thomas, who is the school’s football coach, was serving as the interim athletic director. Herman will officially move into the role on June 30.
