Giants GM Provides Update on Dexter Lawrence II Trade Talks
Reminder: a trade request never guarantees a trade.
On April 6, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that New York Giants defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence II, 28, requested a trade and would not participate in the Giants’ offseason workout program.
Lawrence’s trade request came after talks between the Giants and Lawrence’s representation over “a contract reflecting his value to the team over the past three years” hit a stalemate, per Schefter.
Giants general manager Joe Schoen provided an update on Tuesday.
“We’ve had good conversations with his representatives throughout the last five or six days,” Schoen said, per ESPN’s Jordan Raanan. “Coach [John Harbaugh], [senior vice president of football operations and strategy] Dawn [Aponte], myself, we’ve all been in communication, trying to find some resolution.”
Schoen added, “I’ll echo what Coach said last week: We’d like for Dexter to be here, and at some point we’ll come to a resolution here, whatever that may be. We’ll see. But conversations have been really good, they’ve been productive, and we’ll see what happens here down the road.”
The Giants drafted Lawrence in the first round (No. 17 overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft. The Clemson alum enjoyed three straight Pro Bowl seasons from 2022 to 2024. Last season, Lawrence posted a career-low 0.5 sacks and 31 total tackles last season as the Giants tumbled to a 4-13 record.
“He has also seemed beaten down in recent years by all the losing, which helped produce a subpar individual season for a player with his pedigree and résumé,” Raanan concluded.
Since entering the league, Lawrence has accumulated 30.5 sacks, 341 tackles (185 total), 103 quarterback hits, and 40 tackles for loss.
John Harbaugh is preparing for his first draft as the Giants’ head coach after 18 seasons with the Baltimore Ravens. Anything is on the table at No. 5 overall.
