Mason Miller Makes Padres History With Save vs. Diamondbacks

The San Diego Padres defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks by a final score of 6-4 in the first game of the Mexico City Series on Saturday. Mason Miller earned his league leading 10th save in the 9th inning. He was dominant again, as he did not allow a base runner. Miller also made Padres history in the contest, according to AJ Cassavell of MLB.com.

"Mason Miller has the longest scoreless streak in Padres history. He passed Cla Meredith with a scoreless 9th tonight and has not allowed a run in 34 2/3 innings. He's 6 1/3 innings shy of Baltimore's Gregg Olson for the longest scoreless streak by a reliever (since at least 1961)," Cassavell reported.

As mentioned, Miller has not allowed a run in 34 2/3 innings. He has an opportunity to earn the record for the longest scoreless streak by a reliever since 1961 as well. Miller is simply dominating opposing hitters right now, and he is clearly the best closer in the sport.

The 27-year-old right-handed hurler has a 0.00 ERA to go along with his 10 saves so far in 2026. He has appeared in a total of 13 contests. Opposing batters are hitting just .071 against Miller this season. His WHIP is currently 0.38.

At this point, simply getting on base against Miller is an impressive feat. He is certainly the best closer in baseball right now, but Miller could earn serious consideration for the National League Cy Young Award if he continues to pitch at this level.

German Marquez started the game for San Diego. He allowed four earned runs across six innings of work. The Padres' bullpen took care of the rest.

Ty France led the lineup with two home runs. The Padres ended up with only six total hits in the game, but they found ways to score runs and gave the pitching plenty of run support. It should be noted that San Diego walked five times in the game, so the team had plenty of base runners.

The Padres now hold an 18-8 record this season. They are a half-game ahead of the 18-9 Los Angeles Dodgers for the lead in the National League West standings.

The Padres and Diamondbacks will play once again on Sunday afternoon at 4:05 PM EST as San Diego looks to earn another big victory.
