Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry Releases Statement On LIV Golf Postponement

Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry confirmed the postponement of an upcoming LIV Golf event.

The state agreed with LIV Golf to push back an event scheduled for June 25 in New Orleans amid the league's financial concerns. Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund is reportedly preparing to pull funding.

Courtesy of The Athletic's Brody Miller, Landry and Secretary of Louisiana Economic Development Susan Bourgeois released a joint statement on Tuesday.

"First, we want to thank Zurich and PGA Tour leadership for another outstanding tournament this past weekend. We are proud of the continued partnership and the opportunities this event brings to our state each year," the statement read. "Secretary Bourgeois spoke with LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil on Friday and was informed that the organization seeks to postpone its June 2026 event in New Orleans to explore a potential event this fall."

According to the statement, LIV Golf will return $1.2 million of the $3 million in state funds received from Louisiana. The other $2 million was "already invested in upgrades for City Park."

"We appreciate LIV's good-faith efforts and look forward to maintaining our partnership as we continue conversations around an event later this year," they continued. "We are grateful for the work of our local partners and the collaboration that supported this effort. Louisiana continues to move forward with strong momentum and we remain focused on opportunities that deliver value for our communities."

What's next for LIV Golf?

Backed by Saudi funding, LIV Golf poached several PGA Tour stars when forming in 2022. Its future could now face a crossroads if the PIF divests.

The Athletic reported earlier this month that LIV Golf executives are seeking a "life raft" away from their current roles as the organization "desperately looks for a way to continue operations."

Golfers are also reportedly considering their next moves. According to Golfer's Ben Parsons, several LIV Golf members are eyeing the DP World Tour as a fallback plan if the league shuts down after the 2026 season.

The postponement of the New Orleans event creates a nearly seven-week gap in LIV Golf's summer schedule. The next event is still on track to take place in Washington, D.C., from May 7 to 10.
