Dyson Daniels Calls Out Mitchell Robinson After Hawks-Knicks Scuffle

The Atlanta Hawks suffered an embarrassing blowout loss in Game 6 of the playoffs, which some may joke is why Dyson Daniels left the game before halftime.

Atlanta’s young guard got into an on-court altercation with the New York Knicks‘ Mitchell Robinson, which caused a lengthy delay to the game as players, coaches, referees, and security attempted to intervene. It ultimately led to Daniels and Robinson getting technical fouls and being ejected from the game.

But by then, neither player was going to have a significant impact on a game that was already out of hand by halftime. The Knicks were up 83-36 at the half, and Atlanta didn’t have enough to mount a comeback in the next two quarters, ultimately losing 140-89 and ending their postseason.

Following the on-court clash, Daniels spoke with reporters about what led to his ejection in his team’s final home game of the season. Based on Daniels’ side of the story, this was something that had been playing out all series long.

“Over the series, there was a few elbows thrown … [Mitchell Robinson] kind of does this thing on free throws where he puts his elbows really high, and he got me with two or three of them throughout the series and on the free throws, so I gave him one back, and he didn’t like it, I didn’t like it, so it kind of just boiled over a little bit,” Daniels said.

Unfortunately, Daniels’ actions also stemmed from being on the other side of a massive lead that looked insurmountable. All players were likely feeling a variety of emotions during that game, whether it was excitement for the Knicks or frustration for the Hawks.

And emotions have been on full display this postseason as teams battle for wins. Through the first round, players have been receiving plenty of fouls and postgame fines for their on- and off-court antics or remarks.

A similar playoff scuffle recently involved Denver Nuggets big man Nikola Jokic, who was involved in a late-game confrontation with the Minnesota Timberwolves’ Jaden McDaniels after McDaniels scored with his team up by a double-digit lead and the ball with under five seconds left.

After Jokic confronted McDaniels, the Timberwolves’ Julius Randle got involved, escalating the on-court altercation near the sidelines. The NBA fined both Jokic and Randle for the altercation, but neither received a suspension. Fines are likely for Daniels and Robinson, too.

The Phoenix Suns’ Devin Booker questioned a specific referee’s officiating after his team lost a playoff game to the Oklahoma City Thunder, including a technical he was given for which he never received an explanation. The NBA rescinded Booker’s technical, but also fined him $35,000 for his remarks about the referees.

As of this writing, Daniels and Robinson have yet to receive any fines, but they could be on the way. Meanwhile, Daniels also has the additional punishment of no longer being able to participate in the postseason due to his team’s poor performance. However, Robinson and the Knicks await their next opponent.
