SF Giants beat Pirates behind Devers' homer, Ray's quality start

SAN FRANCISCO - Rafael Devers hit his second home run in as many games and Robbie Ray pitched six innings of one-run ball as the San Francisco Giants defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-2on Friday evening at Oracle Park.

Devers, following an awful first month, continues to heat up. The first baseman extended his hitting streak to eight games with a solo homer, his fourth home run of the season, a single and two runs scored.

Along with Devers, Heliot Ramos, Jung Hoo Lee and Willy Adames all collected two hits apiece while Luis Arraez drove in two runs with a single.

Ray grinded through a laborious third inning, one where he didn't allow a run but threw 31 pitches. The left-hander struck out Billy Cook and Jared Triolo to start the inning, walked Nick Gonzales, Bryan Reynolds and Marcell Ozuna to load the bases, then struck out Oneil Cruz swinging to end the frame.

Despite throwing 63 pitches through three innings, Ray only needed 30 pitches to get through the latter three frames.

The Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Ozuna golfed a well-placed slider over the left-field fence, the 300th home run of his career, but Devers tied the game in the bottom half with a solo homer of his own to dead center.

San Francisco took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth when Ramos drove in Devers with a single, but the Giants left some runs on the table with their baserunning.

With Casey Schmitt at third and Devers at first with no outs, Schmitt broke for home on a grounder to third by Matt Chapman and was thrown out at the plate with feet to spare.

Chapman made his own out on the bases, though it could be chalked up as a sneaky heads-up baserunning move. On Ramos' single, Chapman suddenly slammed on the brakes when trying to go first to third on Ramos' single. Chapman ended up getting turned around and tagged out, but this allowed Devers to score.

The Giants drove in some much-needed insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth, extending their lead to 5-1 with an RBI single from Drew Gilbert and a two-run single from Arraez.

Things got dicey in the top of the ninth for right-hander Caleb Kilian when the Pirates' Spencer Horwitz hit an RBI single, cutting the Giants' lead to 5-2 and bringing the tying run to the plate, but Kilian managed to lock down the win.
