Warriors Front Office Reportedly Indicates Future Plan for Draymond Green

Draymond Green's future with the Golden State Warriors is not as uncertain as it might seem from the outside.

With Steve Kerr reportedly locked in on a new two-year deal, the Warriors have started to settle some of their bigger offseason questions. Green is part of that picture too, at least for now.

According to ESPN's Anthony Slater, the organization currently views him as part of next season's roster, though his $27.7 million player option for 2026-27 keeps things from being completely straightforward.

"Team sources have indicated that they have no intention to shop Green or push him out," Slater wrote. "On the court, they still view him as an additive winner with an elite defensive skill set that plays up when the stakes rise. Off the court, the organization felt he had a positive season as a leader while his acumen and voice essentially make him another assistant coach."

That framing says plenty. Green is not someone Golden State is trying to move. He is someone they are trying to keep, at least in the short term.

Draymond Green's Role and Contract Situation Heading Into 2026-27

The upcoming season would be year 15 for Green in the league. He played in 68 games this past season and held his own on both ends, shooting 41.8% from the field and 32.6% from three while averaging 8.4 points, 5.5 assists and 5.5 rebounds per game.

The scoring numbers are not the reason he's on the floor. His defensive communication and playmaking are, and both remained steady throughout the year. Still, contract conversations are coming.

Slater notes that both sides are expected to weigh their options this summer, with discussions around opting in, opting out or exploring an extension all possible. From Golden State's perspective, a longer deal would only make sense if it creates enough financial room to add elsewhere on the roster.

That is the tension the Warriors are managing. They want to keep Green and upgrade the supporting cast around Curry. Whether both are possible at the same time is the question the front office will be working through over the coming months.

If a significant addition requires a difficult call on Green, that door is not completely shut either. For now though, Golden State is not shopping him. That much is clear.
