Timberwolves Urged to Make Blockbuster Trade to Help Anthony Edwards
The Minnesota Timberwolves are currently in an all-out battle against Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs, trailing them 3-2 in a competitive Western Conference semifinals series.
Tuesday night brought a dominant performance from Wembanyama, with 27 points, 17 rebounds, five assists, and three blocks, leading his squad to a 29-point win at home, while Anthony Edwards struggled to score 20 points.
Julius Randle recorded a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double, with Jaden McDaniels adding 17 points and Ayo Dosunmu getting 16. However, it didn’t seem close enough to contend with the Spurs’ Wemby, who was making unique plays and shots never seen before from a big man.
And as a result, the team is already being mentioned as needing to make a significant trade to upgrade their roster next season. Could Ant-Man get paired up with the Greek Freak?

According to ESPN’s Kendrick Perkins, that’s exactly what he believes the Timberwolves need to do if they want to win in the competitive Western Conference. He sounded off on “First Take,” first suggesting the Boston Celtics’ Brad Stevens needs to get on the phone and trade Jaylen Brown to the Milwaukee Bucks for Giannis Antetokounmpo.
However, Perkins also offered another potential team that he thinks should make a deal for Giannis: the Timberwolves.
“If I’m Minnesota, I’m going after Giannis. You gotta find a way to make Anthony Edwards happy. He can’t continue doing his part, and the others around him are not getting it done,” he said.
“And on top of that, don’t let Karl-Anthony Towns get to the promised land before him and win the NBA championship after they traded him, the heat is really gonna be on,” Perk stated.
Ahead of this postseason, Edwards and the Timberwolves reached the Western Conference Finals back-to-back, losing to the Luka Doncic-led Dallas Mavericks and then to the Oklahoma City Thunder, led by NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
And as mentioned, Ant-Man has been the driving force behind this Minnesota team’s playoff runs, averaging 25.9 points, 6.5 rebounds, five assists, and 1.2 steals in 51 playoff games across his past five postseasons.
As of now, it’s believed many teams will be contacting the Timberwolves about a Giannis trade, with the Celtics, Miami Heat, and Dallas Mavericks listed by Kalshi prediction markets as top contenders in the Greek Freak sweepstakes.
The Timberwolves aren’t among those squads, suggesting they’d really need to pull off a blockbuster trade to bring Giannis to Minnesota, pairing him with fellow multi-time All-Star Anthony Edwards.
They’ve been mentioned in big trade rumors before, including last year’s speculation about two-time NBA champion Kevin Durant, before the Phoenix Suns traded him to the Houston Rockets.
Adding a player of Giannis’ caliber to the Minnesota roster would significantly upgrade their frontcourt and help them contend with Wemby in the Western Conference. What cost would it come at, though?
One has to wonder if the Timberwolves can offer enough or need other teams involved, as ESPN’s trio of Perkins, Stephen A. Smith, and Mike “Mad Dog” Russo agreed it would require a trade package involving an All-Star player with future picks.
