Prep Highlights: Mark Morris softball steamrolls into district title game
May 14-Mark Morris posted a pair of 17-0 wins Thursday to reach the championship game of the Class 2A District 4 softball tournament in Chehalis.
Makenzie Henthorn was nearly untouchable over two five-inning victories. She didn't allow a hit and struck out 15 in the first round against Black Hills.
The Montana-bound senior then surrendered just one hit against Aberdeen in the semifinals, striking out eight.
The win clinched a berth to the 2A state tournament next weekend in Selah. The Monarchs (17-1) will face Evergreen Conference W.F. West for the district title Friday in Chehalis.
Ridgefield is still alive after beating Tumwater 10-3 in the first round.
The Spudders then followed with a 4-3 semifinal loss to W.F. West. Though Abbey Hite tied the game with a three-run homer in the top of the sixth, the Bearcats retook the lead in the bottom of the inning.
Ridgefield can reach the state tournament by winning two loser-out games Friday, starting against Black Hills.
Columbia River and Woodland were eliminated after two losses Thursday. The Rapids fell to Black Hills 3-2 in an elimination game despite Ruby Lew allowing just two hits.
2A District Boys Soccer
RIDGEFIELD 4, CENTRALIA 1 - Drew Tretheway scored two headed goals as the Spudders triumphed in an elimination game at home.
The senior defender scored off a long free kick by Grant Platta to give Ridgefield a 2-0 lead heading into halftime. Tretheway then put the Spudders ahead 3-0 with a slick backwards header.
Emmanuel Vazquez-Contreras and Adrian Merino also scored for Ridgefield.
The Spudders will host a winner-to-state, loser-out match on Saturday against R.A. Long, which beat Aberdeen 1-0 on Thursday.
1A District Boys Soccer
KING'S WAY CHRISTIAN 3, FORT VANCOUVER 0 - Rylan Richter had a goal and two assists as the Knights advanced to the district title game and booked a berth in the state tournament.
Cooper Sprague gave King's Way a 1-0 first half lead. Quin Zahniser and Richter scored in the second half.
The Knights will vie for the title against Evergreen Conference champ Raymond-South Bend, which beat Columbia-White Salmon 1-0 in the semifinals.
Trico League champion Fort Vancouver will face La Center in a winner-to-state, loser-out match on Saturday.
LA CENTER 3, MONTESANO 2 - Ian Johnson scored twice and Ethan Wilson scored the eventual winning goal as the Wildcats survived a loser-out match on the road.
Johnson opened the scoring with a penalty kick, then scored in the second half on an assist by Wilson.
Track and field
HERITAGE GIRLS WIN 3A DISTRICT TEAM TITLE - Makayla Lawrence and Carmen Herrera became dual-event winners on Thursday to help the Heritage girls track and field team win the 3A team title at the 4A/3A District 4 meet at McKenzie Stadium.
Lawrence won the 200 meters on Thursday in 25.75 seconds after taking the 100 title in Wednesday's opening day of the meet.
Herrera, who won the 400 on Wednesday, added a victory in the 800 meters in 2:24.81.
Abrielle Olson also took the title in the long jump (17-0.5) for the Timberwolves, who beat Mountain View 127-113 for the team title.
Other 3A girls winners included Prairie's Claire Copes (3,200, 12:27.09) and Kelli Scheese (discus, 103-4) and Kelso's Macy Swanson (pole vault, 11-3).
Kyleigh Moore of Camas became a two-event winner in the 4A girls meet, winning the discus at 125-6 to go with an earlier win in the shot put.
Sierra Garden (pole vault, 12-7) and Kathryn Sitler (300 hurdles, 46.00) also got wins for the Papermakers, who easily outdistanced Union 121.33-68.17 for the 4A team title.
Union got wins Thursday from Ella Koch (3,200, 10:41.54) and B Brookes (long jump, 16-2).
Paris Ackerman of Skyview ran away from the field in the girls 200, winning in 24.97 seconds. Charlie Garrett of Skyview on the 800 (2:22.66).
Camas also earned the team title in the 4A boys meet.
The Papermakers got wins from Cohen Butler (3,200, 9:09.49), Adrian Manger (discus, 136-11), Keaton Jaques (high jump, 5-9) and Barrett von Duering (long jump, 21-6.5).
Other winners Thursday included Skyview's Kyle Zimmerman (200, 22.91) and Huckleberry Olson (800, 1:56.91) and Union's Lucas Fosterman (300 hurdles, 40.90) and Cameron Roy (shot put, 45-3).
Brady Davidson cleared a personal best of 6 feet, 8 inches to win the 3A boys high jump and help Prairie boys to the team title.
Prairie also got wins from Tavin Timperley (3,200, 9:59.99) and Deven Vigue (long jump, 21-3.5).
Other winners included Kelso's Brandon Thomas (300 hurdles, 41.33) and Odin Sapp (shot put, 49-10.25) and Mountain View's Halo Neal (200, 22.56).
