Postseason baseball, softball roundup: Walla Walla pulls off district upset to extend season

A quick start and a pair of Connor Nunes home runs proved to be more than enough offense for Walla Walla's baseball team to extend its season in Liberty Lake on Tuesday.

Wa-Hi jumped out to an early four-run lead before both of Nunes' four-baggers as the No. 9 Blue Devils staved off elimination and beat host No. 5 Ridgeline 9-5 in a Class 3A District 6 loser-out contest. Wa-Hi (8-15) will face elimination again Thursday at No. 3 Mt. Spokane.

Trey McCauley hit a pair of RBI singles, and Braeden McCauley plated a pair in the second inning as the Blue Devils pounced on the favored Falcons early before Nunes cracked the first of his two homers, a three-run shot to right field, to put them up 8-1 in the fifth. Nunes added a solo homer in the seventh to close the scoring for Wa-Hi.

Landon Kelly earned the win on the mound, striking out three over six and two thirds innings, scattering eight hits and four walks while allowing five runs, four of which were earned.

On the final day of the SE 1B softball tournament on Monday, Pomeroy, DeSales and Dayton all played for district seeding. DeSales opened the day with a 17-1 win over Pomeroy before beating Dayton 7-3 to claim the SE 1B's third district seed. The Bulldogs beat No. 1 Colton 7-5 to guarantee themselves a top four seed earlier in the day. The Pirates then lost 15-4 to the Wildcats, finishing sixth in the tournament.

All three will open District 6 play on Friday at Spokane's Franklin Park with a loser-out matchup. DeSales (18-7) will take on Mary Walker, Dayton (11-10) will clash with Moses Lake Christian and Pomeroy (7-15) will meet Republic.
