JB Bickerstaff Hot Seat Rumors Addressed After Pistons Playoff Exit: Report
The Detroit Pistons were on the cusp of returning to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2008, but experienced a rough outing in Game 7 on their home court, falling 125-94 to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
It was a surprising exit for the No. 1 seed, who had been able to come back from the brink of elimination in the first round and advance after defeating the Orlando Magic in a Game 7 at Detroit. Despite Detroit forcing another Game 7 in the ECF, the Cavs won two games on Detroit’s home floor to take the series.
Sunday night’s blowout loss was horrific, with the Pistons trailing 64-47 at halftime, and never able to climb out of the double-digit hole they were in. They shot 35 percent as a team, were outrebounded 50-41, and committed 31 personal fouls to the Cavs’ 22.
Pistons head coach J.B. Bickerstaff had no answers to fix his team’s poor second-half performance, and they lost both quarters in front of their home fans. With that, some may speculate that Bickerstaff could be on the hot seat after such a disappointing finish to the season.

However, based on a recent report, it appears Bickerstaff doesn’t need to worry about job security with the Detroit Pistons organization, whose confidence reportedly “hasn’t wavered” in him as their head coach.
“The Pistons view him as the coach of the future, and the expectation, per league sources, is for Bickerstaff to be around long term,” The Athletic’s Hunter Patterson stated.
“He’s established meaningful relationships throughout the locker room and has cultivated a culture that the organization believes is sustainable, given the team’s youth,” Patterson also reported.
Bickerstaff was a coach and assistant or associate coach for many NBA teams, including the Cavaliers from 2020 to 2024, before joining the Pistons in 2024. He’s also coached the Memphis Grizzlies for two seasons and served as an interim head coach for the Houston Rockets.
ESPN’s Jamal Collier reported earlier this month that the Pistons signed Bickerstaff to a contract extension after winning their first-round series against Orlando, suggesting he’ll remain there for the foreseeable future.
The team made a major stride forward this past season, with a 60-22 record to claim the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference. Unfortunately, they struggled in both playoff series, but that is an experience Bickerstaff can build upon with his young team for the future.
Their star, Cade Cunningham, was part of the conversation for the NBA MVP award at times during the past season, thanks to his role in helping lead his squad to an impressive record. It seems he’s far from done striving to get the Pistons back to the NBA Finals, as previous squads did.
That said, while the team’s issue isn’t with Bickerstaff, it could lie in making the right offseason moves. They have All-Star center Jalen Duren as a restricted free agent, so they can match any offers he gets from suitors. In addition, Tobias Harris, Kevin Huerter, and Javonte Green are unrestricted free agents.
The best answer could be finding a solid second scoring option for this Pistons team to get over that hump in the East, much like the Cavs did by adding former NBA MVP James Harden as a backcourt mate for All-Star Donovan Mitchell.
