Chiefs WR Rashee Rice Gets 30 Days in Jail After Probation Violation

Rashee Rice has been dealing with legal trouble since March 2024, when he was behind the wheel of a leased Lamborghini Urus doing 119 mph on Dallas' North Central Expressway.

He made several aggressive lane changes before losing control of the SUV, crashed into the center median, and set off a chain-reaction accident involving five other vehicles. Multiple people were hurt. Rice and several passengers walked away from the scene without checking on anyone else involved.

That incident led to Rice pleading guilty in July to two third-degree felony charges including collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing bodily injury.

Under a deferred adjudication agreement, he had a path to avoid permanent felony convictions if he completed a five-year probation term without incident. He was nearly 10 months into that sentence.

Rashee Rice Sentenced to 30 Days in Jail After Testing Positive for THC

That path got a lot narrower on Tuesday. Rice was sentenced to 30 days in jail after testing positive for marijuana, which put him in direct violation of his probation terms. The Texas State Attorney's Office confirmed he was ordered to report immediately.

"Mr. Rice was taken into custody today in the 194th Judicial District Court for testing positive for THC and ordered to serve the 30 days that he had previously been ordered to serve at a later time, starting today," the Dallas County DA's office said per ESPN.

Jail records show Rice was booked into Dallas County jail at 1:25 p.m. ET. His scheduled release date is June 16.

What This Means for the Kansas City Chiefs

That timeline puts the Kansas City Chiefs receiver out of commission for both the team's voluntary workouts next week and mandatory minicamp, which wraps up June 11.

It's another setback in what's been a difficult stretch for Rice. He started the 2025 season serving a six-game suspension tied to the league's personal conduct policy connected to the original crash. Once he returned, he put together a solid eight-game run with 53 catches for 571 yards and five touchdowns before an injury ended his year early.

Rice still has a chance to complete his probation and keep the felony charges off his record permanently, but Tuesday's development is a serious bump in that road. How this affects his standing with Kansas City heading into the regular season remains to be seen.
