NBA Acknowledges Two Mistakes in Closing Minutes of Spurs-Thunder Game 1

The San Antonio Spurs defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals on Monday night, notching a 122-115 final score in double overtime.

On Tuesday afternoon, the NBA released its “last two minute” report for the thrilling postseason matchup.

The league acknowledged two officiating errors that took place in the closing minutes of the Game 1 contest at Oklahoma City’s Paycom Center - both of which went against the visiting Spurs.

First, the NBA identified a foul that should’ve been called on Thunder forward Jalen Williams, who “initiates contact with [Victor] Wembanyama’s arm that causes him to lose control of the ball.” That incident occurred with just over one minute remaining in the fourth quarter.

Next, the league acknowledged an incorrect out-of-bounds call with just over one minute remaining in the first overtime. OKC guard Alex Caruso threw the ball off Wembanyama, but his foot had already made contact with the ground by the time he released the ball.

“Possession should have been awarded to the Spurs,” the NBA wrote.
