Doctor Points To 'Red Flags' After Kyle Busch's Death at 41

A North Carolina doctor has pinpointed the "red flags" to look out for in the wake of Kyle Busch's death at 41 last week.

Busch, a prominent NASCAR Cup Series driver, was pronounced dead on Thursday, May 21. He was coming off a race at Watkins Glen earlier in May, when he was heard asking for a "shot" from a doctor at the track. Busch was reportedly rushed to the hospital on Wednesday, after being found unresponsive.

"The medical evaluation provided to the Busch Family concluded that severe pneumonia progressed into sepsis, resulting in rapid and overwhelming associated complications," the Busch family statement read. "The Family asks for continued understanding and privacy during this difficult time."

But were warning signs missed? Anytime someone passes this suddenly, at this young of an age, there will be questions and investigations.

UNC Health Critical Medicine Specialist Dr. Kenton Dover admitted that this all happened incredibly fast.

"(It was) surprising, was very fast," Dr. Dover said.

Dover also responded to the idea that Busch's death could have been caused by a vaccine. Dover said that the pneumonia vaccine is very effective and safe, though only 25 percent of Americans get it.

"We do know it's very effective and it has very minimal side effects."

Doctor warns of 'warning signs' that can be missed

The doctor warned that the following warning signs can be missed with pneumonia, especially in older patients:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Coughing up blood
  • Chest pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Confusion

Any of those symptoms should result in a quick hospital visit.

"If there's any symptoms that are red flag type symptoms, you should get evaluated sooner rather than later," he said. "When I say red flag, I mean things like severe shortness of breath, severe chest pain, difficulty breathing, coughing up blood or, you know, for our elderly patients, sometimes it can just be confusion or, just not acting themselves."

Busch's family, meanwhile, continues to ask for privacy.

"Our entire NASCAR family is heartbroken by the loss of Kyle Busch. A future Hall of Famer, Kyle was a rare talent, one who comes along once in a generation. He was fierce, he was passionate, he was immensely skilled and he cared deeply about the sport and fans. Throughout a career that spanned more than two decades, Kyle set records in national series wins, won championships at NASCAR's highest level and fostered the next generation of drivers as an owner in the Truck Series. His sharp wit and competitive spirit sparked a deep emotional connection with race fans of every age, creating the proud and loyal ‘Rowdy Nation.' Our thoughts are with Samantha, Brexton and Lennix, Kyle and Samantha's parents, Kurt and all of Kyle's family, Richard and Judy Childress, everyone at Richard Childress Racing, his teammates, friends and fans. NASCAR lost a giant of the sport today, far too soon.

"During this incredibly difficult time, we ask everyone to respect the family's privacy and continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers. Further updates will be shared as appropriate."
