Spurs Coach Mitch Johnson Doesn't Hold Back Thoughts on Victor Wembanyama
The Oklahoma City Thunder took down the San Antonio Spurs 127-114 in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals to put Victor Wembanyama and company on the brink of elimination.
Following the game, Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson made it abundantly clear Wembanyama needed to do more offensively to set the team up for success. The former No. 1 overall pick made just 4 of 15 shots and missed all five of his 3-pointers while 12 of his 20 points came from the free throw line.
“He’s got to take more than 15 shots,” Johnson said. “Even with the [12] free throws, he’s going to have to score more than 20 points for sure.”

In the Spurs two victories in the series, Wembanyama has taken at least 22 shots from the floor. In the team’s three losses, though, he’s taken 16 or fewer shots from the field – to Johnson’s point.
“OKC did a good job. We’ve got to do a better job,” Johnson added. “That’s probably the easiest in terms of when you [look at] surface-level stuff that he’ll definitely need to take more shots.”
“But there’s a lot of things all over the place. Even when we had advantages, we just didn’t make simple plays and take advantage of the opportunity, that possession. In this type of game, you’ve got to be sure of everything you’re doing in a very secure, mature way.”
Game 6 between the Spurs and Thunder is set for Thursday, May 28.
