Fantasy Basketball 2026-27: Players Whose Usage Depends on Summer Decisions

Summertime may mean the court is empty. But it also means that big decisions are about to change the landscape for next season. And just one of those decisions can completely impact a player's projected minutes and usage in 2026-27.

A single draft pick, trade, or free-agency signing can dramatically expand or shrink a player's role. And for fantasy basketball managers not paying attention, those moves can have serious implications when the new campaign opens up next fall.

Here are some of the players whose fantasy value depends on one or two summer decisions, and how managers should react.

Why Summer Decisions Create Usage Swings

Moves That Could Unlock (or Limit) Their Usage

Trades and draft picks can have a massive ripple effect on a roster. A void can open up on the depth chart, leading to new opportunities.

It's also possible the rotation can get too crowded, leading to minutes cuts and less usage. Even players who are in line for a roster promotion can lose that opportunity because of a big trade or top-10 draft selection.

For established superstars and fantasy roster anchors, summer moves like this probably won't hurt their fantasy output. But if managers don't identify the players most sensitive to these summer decisions, fantasy value gets left on the table.

Kyshawn George

The 22-year-old saw an uptick in minutes in his sophomore season with the Wizards, and his growth into a 3-and-D player makes him a fantasy asset for blocks, steals, assists, and three-point shots. George should be on track to play even more minutes in 2026-27. However, that playing time will be threatened if the Wizards select A.J. Dybantsa with the first overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. Few players are as sensitive to summer outcomes as George is.

Marcus Smart

The veteran guard had a bounce-back season in 2025-26 and became an important veteran glue guy for the Lakers, rotating between the second unit and the starting lineup. Summer decisions weigh heavily now for Smart because he is a pending UFA. Staying in Los Angeles would ensure he plays plenty of minutes, and he would probably get even more opportunities if Austin Reaves ends up departing. If Smart is headed to another team, however, his role for next season is a lot less clear.

Tari Eason

We've talked a lot about roster logjams recently, and boy is Eason stuck in one with the Rockets. It's unlikely Houston will part ways with Kevin Durant, so the pending RFA's best bet at more opportunities is to go elsewhere when the market opens. Eason boasts strong defense (6.3 RPG, 1.7 stocks), which gives him value in category leagues. However, he's dependent on a summer move to ensure his usage can increase.

Keyonte George

The Jazz are in the midst of a big team transition, which allowed George to have plenty of opportunities during his rookie season. (He was so hot at one point, he even made one of our sell-high lists.) George is clearly in Utah's plans for the near future, although his minutes could depend on whether the Jazz draft dynamic guard Darryn Peterson. The duo could be an impressive backcourt battery, but Peterson could cut into George's minutes. (And his fantasy production, for that matter.)

Jaime Jaquez Jr.

The 2025 league leader for points off the bench is a reliable and versatile player who averaged 28.5 minutes per game on Miami's second unit. But he has shown he can play a starting role, and a spot could open up if Andrew Wiggins is traded this summer. Jaquez shot 50.7% from the field and provides added fantasy value for rebounds and assists, so an uptick in usage would be big.

When to Buy Low, Sell High, or Wait

Managers across all formats need to keep a close eye on draft selections and free-agency signings before solidifying their rosters for next season. Since the players on our list are all mid-to-late round roster picks, owners can feel more confident playing the waiting game for summer decisions to unfold. Managers in redraft leagues even need to watch depth chart shifts into the start of training camp to see who will grab more usage, and who will be limited to start the 2026-27 season.
