Caitlin Clark Identifies 'Most Important' Part of Her Game

Apart from being a prolific scorer, Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark is also one of the best playmakers in the WNBA today. The fact that she is currently averaging 23.8 points and 9.0 assists - both career-high marks - early in the new season is a testament to this notion.

However, Clark is adamant that neither of these stands out as the most important element of her game. According to the two-time All-Star, what matters even more is the mental aspect. This is exactly why Clark has employed the services of a sports psychologist for years.

"I think it's a great thing," Clark told reporters on Monday during Fever practice. "I think any high-performing athlete would tell you that you wouldn't be able to perform at that level without it. And if a high-performing athlete doesn't have one, well, that's pretty impressive.

"So, I think it's just a good outlet for you. At the same time, you have the human side to balance, and then you have the performance side. You're trying to deal with both, and at times it can be a lot."

Clark went on to highlight how valuable having a sports psychologist is for her on a personal level.

"So, I think it's maybe the most important thing that I have as part of my team and the people that I work with," the 24-year-old continued. "Obviously, my body and the performance matter because I want to be great, but I can't do that if my mind's not right. So, I feel like that's probably the most important thing."

Having a professional to talk to has been very beneficial for Clark through the years. She credits this for the development of her maturity level both on and off the court.

"And I probably learned that over the course of the years - you don't always just have to power through, power through, power through," Clark said. "It's okay to be disappointed or upset or stressed or doubt something.

"And at the same time, you don't want to get too positive or too high on yourself. You want to continue to stay right in the middle. So, it helps you learn a lot about yourself, how to become a better leader, be a good teammate, and remain confident in everything that you do."

Clark battled through multiple injuries last season. She was limited to just 13 games throughout the campaign.

The former Iowa Hawkeyes star put in the work behind the scenes to get back to top form. It was not an easy journey, and the support she received from her sports psychologist went a long way in helping her get to where she is now.
