Awards and a walkoff win make for special night Clark County Senior All-Star Baseball Game

RIDGEFIELD - Monday night was a special night for Landon DeBeaumont.

And the night had a dream ending for Conrad Pfeifer.

Pfeifer, a catcher from Columbia River, delivered a two-run single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth to send the American League to a 10-9 victory over the National League in the Clark County All-Star Game for high school senior baseball players.

"That was unreal, man; I mean that was beautiful," Pfeifer said. "You dream of that. I mean, what was it, (9-6) going into the last inning. (River teammate Kian Segel) has a really good at-bat. He took some pitches that were definitely borderline and did his part. He walked in a run. I knew in the dugout it was either going to be me or him. And it was me."

The hit capped a four-run rally for the Americans in a thrilling end to a great night of baseball.

"All my friends in the dugout came up to me and said 'sit back, work the other way,' " Pfeifer said. "I did my thing my thing, sat back, bang the ball up the middle, drove in two runs. That's backyard situation. You dream of that."

DeBeaumont, an infielder from Ridgefield, was selected the MVP for the game for the American League team, receiving a scholarship from the Evergreen Baseball Umpires Association.

Earlier Monday night, DeBeaumont received another honor. Monday was Senior Awards night at Ridgefield High School, but DeBeaumont missed the event to play in Monday's All-Star baseball game at the Ridgefield Outdoor Recreation Complex.

During the fourth inning, Ridgefield athletic director Brynan Shipley arrived at the RORC to present DeBeaumont with the honor as Ridgefield High's athlete of the year. DeBeaumont also played quarterback last fall for the Spudders.

"I wasn't expecting any of this to happen," DeBeaumont said. "I had no idea about the athlete of the year award. And then to win the MVP was pretty fun."

DeBeaumont said the MVP honor had added meaning as the scholarship was named in honor of Jeremiah Johnson, a 2001 Prairie High graduate who was killed while serving in the Army in Iraq in 2007.

"To get the scholarship (named) for the veteran who died, that means a lot," DeBeaumont said. "My mom actually started crying. My mom's dad was a veteran, so that meant a lot to me."

James Gill III of Battle Ground won the MVP honor for the National League all-stars.

Monday marked the second year of a new format for the event.

In past years, senior all-stars played two eight-inning games. To to do that, 50 players were selected to play.

But last year, the event began to include a Futures Game, an all-star game featuring underclassmen. DeBeaumont played in that game last year as a junior.

The Senior All-Star game was shortened to one eight-inning game, and that required only 30 seniors to play selected.

"It makes it more special because now these players are the best of the best," Ridgefield coach Nick Allen said. "Although the meeting between the coaches to select those players took more than three hours."

Allen also added that the format provided a better atmosphere. People and players who came for the futures game stayed for the seniors game.

But mostly, it was a fun night for the players on the field.

"This is probably the most fun baseball I've ever had," Pfeifer said. "Truly, honestly. ... All my friends throughout the league, the best players in the area arguably, all in one game? You dream about this night."
