NBA Investigating Finals Game 1 Fan Incidents Involving Jalen Brunson

The New York Knicks captured a 105-95 win over the Spurs in Game 1 of the NBA Finals, with Jalen Brunson performing admirably amid injury scares and fan heckling in rowdy San Antonio.

He left the court several times due to potential injuries to his knee and ankle, with one of those times involving a trip back to the locker room for further evaluation. However, the gritty New York guard persevered, returning to the court and leading his team to a comeback.

He finished with 30 points in the game to go with three rebounds and two assists. Following his team’s win, Brunson seemed frustrated, making a point of walking over to referee Scott Foster and others to discuss something near the courtside area.

His teammate, Jose Alvarado, may have noticed his frustration, even walking over to hug and briefly talk to him before Brunson participated in his postgame interview for ESPN.

On Thursday, Prime’s senior NBA insider Chris Haynes reported that the league is now looking into an incident involving two courtside fans who continued to direct “vulgar profane ‘flopping’ remarks” at Brunson.

Brunson apparently spoke with Foster after the game to inform him about the fans, and Haynes indicated that the “remarks continued.”

It’s one of several fan incidents that occurred during Game 1 of the NBA Finals. In another, a fan rushed onto the court to snap a selfie with Spurs star Victor Wembanyama. Security quickly grabbed him and escorted him off the court, and the referees met to discuss the best way to continue the game due to the disruption.

Brunson didn’t directly mention the fan comments in his postgame interviews. The “flopping” criticism has followed players like Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander around, with chants emerging at Spurs games during the Western Conference Finals, and Wembanyama then receiving similar treatment from fans in OKC.

Fan heckling has always been a huge part of sports, but sometimes it goes too far with unnecessary remarks. Fans have been removed from arenas and banned from attending future events or games at certain sports teams’ venues. In extreme cases, leagues ban fans from attending any league games.

Game 2 between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs arrives on Friday at 8:30 p.m. ET in San Antonio.
