Tigers' A.J. Hinch Reveals Reason for Tarik Skubal Decision Before Mariners Game
Coming into the 2026 MLB season, the Detroit Tigers had some pretty lofty expectations from fans and media. A year removed from their deepest playoff run in over a decade, it was clear the team had the pieces to contend.
A 16-16 start to the season at April's conclusion wasn't exactly what Detroit was hoping for, but it wasn't the worst. There was still room to improve.
At that time, major news came out about Tiger ace Tarik Skubal. The big lefty had loose bodies in his elbow, requiring surgery with an expected recovery time of 2 to 3 months.
Without their ace starter, the Tigers have been dreadful. They went 6-22 in the month of May. Skubal's presence would have netted them at the very least a few more wins than six.
Heading into this weekend's slate of games, Detroit is 25-38. They are 10 ½ games out of first place in the American League Central, which is currently occupied by the Cleveland Guardians.
Even in a weak AL playoff race, the Tigers are still well behind the pack at 5 ½ games out of the third wild card spot. Skubal's return to the staff is essential if the team wants to get back in the race.
Luckily for them, the 29-year-old is eyeing a return very soon. A report today from Jason Beck of MLB.com said he is making his first rehab start this Sunday. "Tarik Skubal will make a rehab start Sunday at High-A West Michigan, manager A.J. Hinch announced. The weather forecast in Grand Rapids is more favorable than in Iowa, where Triple-A Toledo plays this weekend and where Justin Verlander made a rehab start Tuesday."

Hinch also commented that he has hope of Skubal only needing the one start at High-A West Michigan before returning to the big league staff, Beck reported in a subsequent post on X.
The lefty was fantastic in limited action this season. He went 3-2 with a 2.70 ERA in 43 ⅓ innings pitched with 45 strikeouts and a 0.95 WHIP.
With the rehab start scheduled for Sunday and Hinch's hope of Skubal only needing that start, the lefty could be back as soon as next weekend's road trip.
