Carlo Ancelotti Reacts As Brazil Risks Losing Key Starter for World Cup
Carlo Ancelotti and Brazil enter the 2026 World Cup among the favorites, but injury concerns continue to affect the squad, with the team suffering a potential setback during Saturday's friendly against Egypt.
While Brazil secured a comfortable 2-1 victory over Egypt thanks to goals from Bruno Guimarães and Endrick, the team received a scare when starting defender Wesley França felt discomfort early in the first half after delivering a cross.
The Roma full-back was unable to continue and left the pitch in tears after just 17 minutes into the game. Ancelotti responded by bringing on Danilo in his place.
Speaking to reporters after the match, Ancelotti acknowledged the significance of the injury while stressing the need to wait for further evaluation.
"It would be a shame to lose Wesley, but first we have to wait for the tests. In that case, we'll have good players to replace him," he said.

França was making his eighth appearance for Brazil and appeared poised to be a starter at the World Cup despite being just 22 years old. He is scheduled to undergo tests on Sunday, and the extent of the injury remains unclear.
The Roma defender had spoken enthusiastically about his first World Cup after being named to Brazil's 26-man roster.
"Aware of the responsibility I carry in representing my country. Childhood dream just came true, I love you my Brazil," he wrote in an Instagram post.
As Ancelotti noted, however, Brazil has considerable depth at the position. Danilo, Alex Sandro, and Douglas Santos are all capable options, while Paris Saint-Germain star Marquinhos anchors the heart of the defense.
Since taking over as head coach in 2025, Ancelotti has emphasized a balance between attacking freedom and defensive stability. While França's potential absence could force adjustments, the veteran coach has built a flexible system centered around both 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 formations.
Brazil remains the most successful nation in World Cup history with five titles and is the only country to have qualified for every edition of the tournament. Expectations are once again sky-high, with anything short of a deep run likely to be viewed as a disappointment.
The Seleção has not lifted the trophy since 2002, and memories of the 7-1 loss to Germany in the 2014 World Cup still linger. While the attack is expected to be led by Neymar and Vinícius Jr. this summer, maintaining defensive balance will be equally important to Brazil's title hopes.
Brazil has been drawn into Group C alongside Morocco, Haiti, and Scotland. Its tournament opener is scheduled for June 13 against Morocco.
