NASCAR Drivers React to Violent Wreck Between Christopher Bell and Chase Elliott at Michigan
A red flag has been displayed at Michigan International Speedway. With speeds that can get in excess of 200 MPH, there have been a record 10 cautions today. The latest courtesy of a scary collision between Christopher Bell and Chase Elliott.
With Bell and Elliott racing in the front of the field, many drivers got a front row seat to the violence of the wreck. The SAFER barrier did its job, but repairs are needed, and drivers are going to be thinking about that wreck as they finish this race.
"Let me know if he's OK. That was wild," Ryan Preece said, via Jeff Gluck of The Athletic.
Jordan Bianchi of The Athletic reports that Bubba Wallace got on the radio and said, "Holy (expletive). Please tell me that guy's alright."
Meanwhile, Kyle Larson and his team were trying to figure out what happened to their car. Larson was hit with debris. Cliff Daniels believes it was the right side window off of Bell's car.
"I got him with something in the roof. Pretty sure if left a mark," Larson said, via Richard Allen of Motorsports Report. "We think it was the right side window from the 20 that hit us," Daniels responded.
When drivers see a hit like that, it reminds them just what is at stake in the race. It is also a reminder to fans of just how brave these drivers are behind the wheel. Thankfully, safety technology has made tremendous strides in the last 25 years. It is not an exaggeration to say the outcome would have likely been more dire if this happened in 2000 rather than 2026.
Drivers notice these big hits. It can sometimes make them second guess themselves on the track. Another challenge for these drivers to overcome as the race is coming to an end.
