Dolphins Advised to Trade Player They Just Re-Signed Before September
The Miami Dolphins are trying to come back from a 7-10 record in the 2025 season, and they’re making changes under new head coach Jeff Hafley. Now, the team is being advised to make a blockbuster move before the start of the new season.
Moe Moton of Bleacher Report has a new piece out about the upcoming NFL season, and in it, he names one blockbuster trade each franchise should make before the 2026 season starts. “We could get more transactional fireworks this summer, or at least see moves that we expected teams to make, like the Brown deal, before final roster cuts on August 30,” he states.

For the Dolphins, Moton wants to see them trade linebacker Willie Gay Jr. They just re-signed Willie Gay Jr. to a one-year, $3 million deal, but they could still decide to move forward with a trade.
“The Dolphins have a crowded linebacker room of veterans and rookies,” Moton states. “Gay only played 12 percent of the defensive snaps last season. If Miami thins the rotation at that position, he could be the first to go. At 28, Gay is in his prime with 57 starts on his six-year resume. He could catch on as a lead linebacker with another team.”

The Dolphins have a pretty crowded linebacker room, especially after they selected rookie linebackers Jacob Rodriguez and Kyle Louis in the second and fourth rounds of the 2026 NFL draft. Now could be a good time for them to trade Gay and get something solid in return for him.
