NBA Ripped For Failing To Discipline Victor Wembanyama For Shoving Jalen Brunson
San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama is being called the NBA's new "golden boy" due to the treatment he's received this postseason.
During the second round of this year's playoffs, Wembanyama was ejected from a game for throwing an elbow at Minnesota Timberwolves forward Naz Reid. He wasn't, however, fined or suspended for his vicious act. The very next series, the French phenom was accused of telling teammates Mason Plumlee and Bismack Biyombo to foul Oklahoma City Thunder guard Jared McCain hard during Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals.
As if Wembanyama hasn't already been accused of being a dirty player this postseason, he shoved New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson to the floor during Game 3 of the NBA Finals.
Not only did Wembanyama avoid getting a flagrant foul on Monday night, he avoided any discipline during Tuesday's review process. Interestingly enough, NBA senior vice president of referee development and training Monty McCutchen said Wembanyama's shove should've been a foul.
Fans are convinced the NBA refrained from giving Wembanyama another flagrant foul because he already has two flagrant points in the postseason. He's two more flagrant points away from an automatic suspension.
Wrong decision by the NBA?
Countless media members and fans believe the league made a mistake by letting Wembanyama off the hook.
"If Brunson hadn't kept his cool and had run up on Wemby, the refs would've snap called a tech on Jalen, reviewed the play & 100% have given Wemby a flagrant," Nick Wright of Fox Sports said. "Instead, Brunson was a pro and Wemby gets to completely skate on it. Doesn't seem right to me."
"Don't agree with this. Just like I didn't agree with him not getting a fine with his flagrant 2 for the Naz elbow," Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic replied.
"League really isn't hiding their bias towards Wemby, any other player would've got the boot by now," one fan declared.
"Absolute [expletive], NBA is allowing Wemby to do what he wants as they favor the Spurs over the Knicks," a Knicks fan commented.
"I didn't want Wemby suspended, but this is getting pretty funny," another fan said.
Game 4 of the NBA Finals is set for 8:30 p.m. ET this Wednesday.
It'll be fascinating to see how the referees handle any extracurricular activities involving Wembanyama.
