Phillies Linked to Two Impact Outfield Trade Candidates

The Philadelphia Phillies received a major blow over the weekend when they placed outfielder Adolis Garcia on the 60-day injured list with a torn right lat.

Garcia injured the lat on a throw home during Wednesday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays. He immediately grabbed at the area and exited the game.

A move to the 60-day injured list so soon after an injury is rarely a good sign. Subsequent reports have suggested Garcia's chances of returning this season are in serious doubt.

While Garcia wasn't producing at the plate like he did during his peak years with the Texas Rangers, he was once again providing Gold Glove-caliber defense in right field.

With Garcia's outlook growing increasingly bleak, the Phillies have reportedly turned their attention to two intriguing outfielders ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Philadelphia is expected to pursue outfield help at the deadline. Chicago Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki and Los Angeles Angels outfielder Jo Adell are two names the club is monitoring.

Suzuki is the more proven player of the two and is putting together another strong season at the plate. He is slashing .255/.339/.433 with a .772 OPS and 10 home runs.

He has also continued to play strong defense in right field. Suzuki owns two Outs Above Average and possesses one of the strongest outfield arms in baseball, making him a natural replacement for Garcia.

The biggest concern with Suzuki has always been durability. Last season marked the first time in his MLB career that he played more than 140 games, appearing in 151 games.

It appeared Suzuki was on track for another healthy season until Saturday. He exited the Cubs' game against the San Francisco Giants with knee discomfort after charging in on a fly ball. It remains unclear whether the injury will force him to miss additional time.

As for Adell, his bat has started to heat up after a slow start. He is hitting .249/.291/.394 with a .685 OPS and 10 home runs this season.

The 27-year-old broke out in a big way last year, blasting 37 home runs after struggling through much of the early part of his career.

Adell has never been a hitter known for patience. He attacks pitches aggressively and ranks in the bottom eight percentile of baseball with a 38.6% chase rate.

Either player would make plenty of sense for the Phillies at the deadline. Entering Sunday, Philadelphia holds a 1.5-game lead for the second National League Wild Card spot.

The Phillies are expected to explore other upgrades as well, but adding an outfielder has quickly become one of their top priorities.
