Who Is Dick Advocaat? Meet Curaçao's Head Coach at the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Curaçao made football history by qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, shattering the record to become the smallest nation by both population and area ever to compete at the tournament.

With a population of roughly 150,000, they surpassed the previous record set by Iceland in 201

Leading them is Dick Advocaat, one of the most experienced managers in world football and, currently in charge of leading the team during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

At the tournament, the Dutch coach is set to become the oldest manager in World Cup history, taking the record from South Africa's Hugo Broos.

All About Curaçao's Head Coach Dick Advocaat

Over a coaching career that has spanned several decades, Advocaat has managed some of the biggest clubs in Europe. His resume includes spells with Feyenoord, PSV Eindhoven, AZ Alkmaar, Rangers, and Sunderland.

At international level, he has also worked with several national teams. Before taking charge of Curaçao, Advocaat managed the men's national teams of the Netherlands, the United Arab Emirates, South Korea, Belgium, Russia, Serbia and Iraq.

He also coached the Netherlands women's national team earlier in his career.

Advocaat was first appointed as Curaçao head coach in 2024. His arrival was seen as a major step for the Caribbean nation looking to continue its progress on the international level.

However, his first spell in charge was interrupted when he stepped down because of his daughter's health issues. Former Dutch international Fred Rutten was appointed as his replacement.

By May 2025, Advocaat's daughter's condition had improved and, following Rutten's departure, the veteran coach returned to lead Curaçao once again.

Since returning, he has helped guide the team to one of the most important periods in its football history, including qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

As of June 14, 2026, Advocaat's record with Curaçao stands at 22 matches managed, with 12 wins, six draws and four defeats.
