NFL Star Weighs in on Jameis Winston's World Cup Antics

Jameis Winston is the NFL‘s most clipped athlete - from eating Ws to rapping Eminem - and the New York Giants backup quarterback is already a content machine as FOX Sports’ World Cup correspondent.

FOX’s Charissa Thompson informed Winston that this is the first time the FIFA men’s World Cup has been played on U.S. soil since 1994, and, of course, Winston had a response ready.

“It has been a minute, but 1994, I was born for this moment,” Winston said. “That is the year that I was born, so when I started crawling around like the worms in the soil, 2026, I knew that we would back.”

Winston’s outsized personality was on full display when he embedded with fans from the Netherlands, but his most viral moment so far came when he was totally unaware of the camera.

The FOX Sports broadcast caught Winston picking up trash and helping Japan fans clean up their section at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, after Japan’s 2-2 draw with the Netherlands on June 14.

Some people cynically wrote Winston’s actions off as a stunt, but New Orleans Saints star running back Alvin Kamara rushed to his defense.

“Lol [expletive] is funny because everybody thinks Jameis doin this for show but he really just a genuinely good dude in real life,” Kamara wrote on X. “Cameras or not.”

Winston began his NFL career as the No. 1 overall pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2015. He had wildly high highs and dumbfounding lows as the Buccaneers starting quarterback for five seasons - epitomized by the 2019 season, in which he led the NFL in passing yards (5,109) and interceptions (30).

Tom Brady’s Tampa arrival in March 2020 left Winston on the outside looking in, so he signed a modest contract with the Saints to back up Drew Brees - and become Kamara’s teammate - the following month. Winston served as the Saints’ backup quarterback from 2020 to 2023 before moving on to the Cleveland Browns (2024) and the Giants (2025).
