8 NFL Teams Named Potential Landing Spots For Brendan Sorsby
The Brendan Sorsby saga took another wild turn, with reports that he plans to enter the NFL's supplemental draft before the 2026 season. Several teams could pursue the Texas Tech quarterback if he goes pro after betting on sports in college.
Although a Texas judge granted Sorsby a temporary injunction that would have made him eligible for the 2026 season, the Big 12 filed a federal lawsuit seeking to enforce bylaws to punish Sorsby. Amid a situation setting college football ablaze, Sorsby could become the first player selected in an NFL supplemental draft since 2019.
Several teams could place a bid on Sorsby, as scouts told ESPN's Matt Miller that the 22-year-old could have been a " high Round 1 pick" in this year's draft. Josh Edwards of CBS Sports suggested eight teams that may pursue Sorsby.
Edwards listed the Arizona Cardinals, Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, New York Jets, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers as potential destinations for Sorsby.
Which NFL teams make most sense for Sorsby?
Those eight franchises all face either short- or long-term question marks under center.
The Cardinals drafted Carson Beck in the third round after ending the Kyler Murray era, but Sorsby could potentially compete with the former Georgia and Miami star if Jacoby Brissett doesn't last the season as a bridge starter. The Jets have 10 draft picks next year, so Edwards suggested they have plenty of capital to bid on Sorsby and see if he's a better solution than Geno Smith and fourth-round rookie Cade Klubnik.
While the Dolphins spent big on Malik Willis after absorbing Tua Tagovailoa's massive dead cap hit, Edwards said there "should be no limitations" to how teams without a clear answer at quarterback chase options at the position. That could also apply to the Cleveland Browns, who will give Deshaun Watson a chance to complete a comeback and win the starting job over Shedeur Sanders.
Sorsby would likely spend 2026 redshirting for the other teams Edwards mentioned.
Edwards suggested that the Panthers could move on from Bryce Young "with relative ease" next offseason despite exercising their fifth-year option. While Baker Mayfield has flourished in Tampa Bay, Sorsby could present a contingency plan if Mayfield leaves in free agency next year.
Although the Colts brought back Daniel Jones, injuries have limited him to 29 games over the last three seasons. An organization that yanked Philip Rivers out of retirement last year can use some young talent after parting ways with Anthony Richardson.
Edwards also believes Sorsby could present a unique opportunity for the Lions to land a backup and potential successor to Jared Goff.
