Sam Kerr's Next Club Revealed After Chelsea Exit: Report

Australian star forward Sam Kerr, 32, bid an emotional farewell to Chelsea FC in mid-May, departing the iconic English club with five Women’s Super League titles and six-plus years’ worth of highlights in her back pocket.

In her final game for Chelsea, Kerr scored a goal against Manchester United to bring her Chelsea goal total to 116, tied with Fran Kirby for the all-time club record. The Matildas captain also showed her suitors what they’d be getting in her next act.

In early April, Kerr shot down a report that she planned to exit Chelsea to join NWSL expansion team Denver Summit FC. It appears the club was wrong, but the league was correct.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Kassouf, Kerr and Gotham FC of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) “have agreed to terms.” As of this writing, neither Gotham nor Kerr have confirmed the move.

Kerr began her illustrious footballing career in the NWSL with the since-defunct Western New York Flash in 2013-14. She moved to what was then Sky Blue FC from 2015 to 2017, well before the club rebranded as Gotham, and finished her first NWSL stint with the Chicago Red Stars (now the Chicago Stars FC) from 2018 to 2019. She earned two NWSL MVP awards before bolting for Chelsea.

Kerr isn’t the only one in her household with formative ties to Gotham FC. Her wife, Kristie Mewis, spent the 2022 and ’23 seasons in New York, winning the 2023 NWSL championship. Mewis, also a former U.S. women’s national team midfielder, married Kerr in Australia this past New Year’s Eve. They welcomed their son, Jagger, in May 2025.
