5 Best Quarterbacks in San Francisco 49ers History
The history of quarterbacking for the San Francisco 49ers features, basically, two straight decades of absolute dominance. In the 1980s and through a bulk of the 1990s, it could be argued no team in the NFL had better quarterbacks.
It's no coincidence, then, that the Niners captured all four of their Super Bowls during that era. And they did so with the two quarterbacks at the top of this list of the best five quarterbacks in team history.
That's far from the only time San Francisco received great signal-calling, though. A Hall of Famer held the job in the 1950s and a team icon who spent 17 years with the 49ers followed his stint.
In other words, the 49ers have been blessed. Let's take a look at the top five to ever do it in the red and gold.
5. Jeff Garcia (1999-2003)
Garcia was supposed to be too small for the NFL. At 6-foot-1, 200 pounds, he instead started his career in the Canadian Football League, where he played five seasons before joining San Francisco. As such, he was the 49ers starter for a good time, not a long time.
Over five seasons as a starter, Garcia went to three Pro Bowls and led the team to two playoff appearances as the first quarterback in a post-Joe Montana/Steve Young era for the first time since 1980. The shoes weren't small to fill and Garcia, who ranks fourth in team history in yards passing, did so rather admirably, considering his circumstances.
When he took San Francisco to the playoffs in 2003, his final season with the team, the 49ers wouldn't make it again until 2010.
4. Y.A. Tittle (1951-1960)
A seven-time Pro Bowler and a Pro Football Hall of Famer, Tittle spent a majority of his career with the 49ers, logging 10 of his 17 professional seasons in San Francisco. His best years, though, came in New York with the Giants, which is why he ranks lower than you might think.
Still, Tittle made four of his Pro Bowls with the Niners, even earning first-team All-Pro honors in 1957 with 2,157 passing yards and 13 touchdowns. For his San Francisco career, Tittle threw for 16,016 yards -- fifth in franchise history -- with 108 touchdowns and 134 interceptions (another reason he ranks just fourth).
3. John Brodie (1957-1973)
Only one player in 49ers history has thrown for more yards in a San Francisco uniform than Brodie, who spent all 17 of years in the Bay Area. And while 10 of those 17 seasons resulted in more interceptions than touchdowns, when Brodie was on, he was on.
The No. 3 overall pick in the 1957 draft, he began to settle in as a starter in 1960. In 1965, after years of good-not-great play, Brodie came through with a whale of a season, completing 242 passes on 391 attempts for 3,112 yards and 30 touchdowns, all NFL highs.
He did one better in 1970, earning MVP honors after leading the league again with 2,941 yards and 24 touchdowns.
2. Steve Young (1987-1999)
On lots of franchise lists, Young would hold the top spot as the team's greatest quarterback in history. Despite starting his professional career in 1985, Young didn't really get going until 1991 when he was 31 years old and took over for the No. 1 player on this list after he suffered an elbow injury.
From 1992 to 1998, Young served as the full-time 49ers starting quarterback. In those seven seasons, he made the Pro Bowl seven times, led the NFL in completion percentage five times, and touchdowns four times.
He'd already won two Super Bowls while serving as a reserve in the 1980s, but picked up one as a starter in 1995, earning Most Valuable Player honors. That went well with his two other regular-season MVPs and seven Pro Bowls.
1. Joe Montana (1979-1992)
Until a man named Tom Brady came along, Montana won a lot of arguments made to determine the greatest quarterback in the history of football. If you're a Brady hater, I suppose, you could still make the argument. Montana is a legend.
The 49ers' all-time leader in passing yards and wins, Montana's resume astounds. He was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2000 after a career filled with eight Pro Bowls, three All-Pro selections, two MVP awards, four Super Bowl wins, and three Super Bowl MVPs.
