French Reporter Who Slammed Jeremy Doku's Decision Faces Consequences
A French sports journalist is now facing real consequences for comments that drew anger from fans and players across Europe.
Jeremy Doku pulled out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be home for the birth of his first child, a decision that earned support from across the soccer world. His wife, Shireen Raymond, is due in July, right around the tournament's quarterfinal stage.
Belgium had reportedly offered to arrange private travel so Doku could attend the birth and return to the squad afterward if things lined up.
French Journalist Faces Suspension Over Doku Comments
That support made what came next stand out even more. L'Équipe presenter France Pierron called Doku's decision "outrageous" on air and claimed fathers are "not needed" during childbirth.
The remarks spread fast and brought heavy criticism from supporters and fellow athletes who saw it differently. Pierron later apologized for what she said, but the damage was already done.
Recent reports suggest that L'Équipe has since suspended her over the comments. Pierron has been pulled from Monday's edition of L'Equipe de Choc, the same show where she made the original remarks.
Journalist Clément Garin added that she will not be hosting going forward, and some staff inside the L'Équipe newsroom have reportedly accused network leadership of hypocrisy in how the situation was handled.

The bigger picture here goes past soccer. Doku's choice is a reminder that players carry responsibilities well outside the sport, and most of the public reaction has leaned in his favor. Even with the tournament stakes high, the response shows family commitments can take priority over competition for a lot of people.
Doku played 86 minutes in Belgium's 1-1 draw with Egypt to open the tournament but missed the second group match against Iran due to illness. His absence leaves a real gap for Belgium, since he's one of their most explosive attacking options.
With the knockout stage still in reach, more pressure now shifts to Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku to carry the attacking load.
