2026 College Football Passing Yards Leader: Top Quarterbacks to Watch
College football fans are used to seeing several of the country's top quarterbacks depart for the NFL each spring. But that was not necessarily the case this year.
Just two quarterbacks were selected in the first two rounds of the NFL Draft back in April, as top prospects like Dante Moore and Arch Manning opted to stay in school. There are plenty of incentives to stay in college an extra season or two in the current college landscape. Between some of these returnees and a talented crop of rising juniors and seniors, many of the most productive passers in the sport are back for the 2026 season.
Not all of them will be wearing the same uniform as they did last fall, though, which is a byproduct of a busy transfer portal. But it should still be a fierce competition to lead the country in passing with so much stability at the signal-caller position.
Drew Mestemaker paced all passers with 4,379 yards last season at North Texas. He was the only player to surpass the 4,000-yard threshold and set a new school record with 608 yards in a single game. Like many of his Mean Green teammates, Mestemaker followed coach Eric Morris to Oklahoma State in the transfer portal.
Darian Mensah finished second to Mestemaker with 3,973 passing yards at Duke. And after winning an ACC championship with the Blue Devils, Mensah transferred to Miami, where he'll benefit from having one of the best wide receiver rooms in the country.
Trinidad Chambliss stayed put at Ole Miss after he was granted an injunction to play in 2026. Despite not starting the first two games of the season for the Rebels, he still finished third nationally with 3,937 yards. Expect USC's Jayden Maiava to be in the mix as well. He finished fifth with 3,711 yards in Lincoln Riley's electric offense, and this will be his third year in that system.
Other top Heisman Trophy contenders, like Ohio State's Julian Sayin, Manning and Moore could also see their passing numbers spike this season. But out of that trio, only Sayin (3,610) finished in the top 10 in passing yards in 2025.
Mestemaker's mark of 4,379 yards was the fewest for a leader - including the shortened 2020 campaign - since the 2012 season. Will he be able to repeat as the passing champion? Or will he be unseated?
