Tracking local golfers on the PGA Tour for Oct. 15, 2015
This week: Frys.com Open, Thursday through Sunday, Silverado Country Club North Course, Napa, California.
In the field: Puyallup’s Ryan Moore and Olympia’s Andres Gonzales.
First-round scores: Moore shot an even-par 72, and Gonzales had a 1-over 73.
Positions: Moore is tied for 88th, and Gonzales is tied for 114th — both trailing leader Brendan Steele (63).
Recap: Instead of debuting in 2015-16 at his hometown event next week in Las Vegas, Moore decided to tee it up in wine country — and at a course with which his caddie, J.J. Jakovac, is very familiar, having grown up neabry. Moore made birdies at two par-5 holes, No. 9 and No. 16 (made 20-foot putt). But he fell back to even-par with a bogey at No. 17 (drive into a fairway bunker). … Gonzales had a rough ending to his front nine with a double bogey at No. 8 (drive in right rough) and bogey at No. 9 (drive out of bounds in right tree line), but he finished his round on a positive note with a birdie at No. 18. At this tournament last year, he shot a 66 in the opening round and made the cut despite shooting a 74 in the second. This time, he’ll need a better Round 2.
Tee times Friday: Moore at 8 a.m. (PDT), and Gonzales at 8:40 a.m. (PDT). Both go off the 10th tee.
