The Puget Sound Loggers had one big run at the end of the first half to hang around Augustana (Illinois), the top-ranked NCAA Division III team in the country.
But the Vikings took control in the second half and defeated the Loggers, 73-49, at Memorial Fieldhouse in Tacoma.
Augustana (7-0) played for the NCAA Division III national championship last season but were defeated by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 70-54.
UPS trimmed the Vikings’ lead to 31-29 by closing on an 11-2 run in the final four minutes of the first half.
But Jawan Straughter’s 3-pointer 55 seconds into the second half triggered a 13-0 run by Augustana to build a 44-29 advantage. The Vikings shot 62.5 percent in the second half (15 of 24 from the field).
Kohl Meyer led all scorers with 13 points for the Loggers (4-5).
