125th annual PNW Open tennis tournament set to begin

2015 champions: Petra Rampre, Midlothian, Virginia (women’s singles). Robert Kendrick, Orlando, Florida (men’s singles). Kendrick/Kyle McMorrow, Tumwater (men’s doubles). Suzanne Matzenauer, Tacoma/Rampre (women’s doubles). Gail Brodsky, Woodinville/Brian Wilson, Bellevue (mixed doubles).

Purse: $22,500 in total prize money. Men’s singles winner gets $4,000, second place 2,000. Women’s singles winner gets $2,500, second place $1,000.

The skinny: Men’s qualifying takes place Monday and Tuesday, then the main event for men and women kicks off Wednesday. … Petra Rampre is back to defend her 2015 crowns in women’s singles and women’s doubles. Former UW tennis player Kyle McMorrow, 2015 winner of men’s doubles and a past winner in the men’s singles, will be in the mix for men’s singles (last year’s men’s singles champion, Robert Kendrick, is not in the field). On the women’s side, Gail Brodsky of Woodinville, last year’s women’s singles runner-up and mixed doubles champ, is not competing. During the week, 157 players will compete. Current UW and former Federal Way standout Mitch Stewart is in the field. … Local prep standouts Theodore McDonald (IMG Academy Bollettieri Tennis) and Jack Katzman (University Prep) are among those seeking to qualify. Thursday, 11 a.m. to approximately 9 p.m. (men’s singles main draw, round of 16; women’s singles, round of 16; men’s doubles, round of 32; women’s doubles, round of 32; mixed doubles, round of 32). Friday, 11 a.m. to approximately 9 p.m. (men’s singles, quarterfinals; women’s singles, quarterfinals; men’s doubles, round of 16; women’s doubles, round of 16; men’s doubles, quarterfinals; women’s doubles, quarterfinals; mixed doubles, round of 16).
