UW men’s basketball trip to Gonzaga canceled due to COVID-19 protocols

The planned nonconference men’s basketball game between in-state rivals Washington and No. 5 Gonzaga has been canceled.

The game, which was set for Sunday afternoon in Spokane, will not be played this season due to COVID-19 protocols in UW’s program.

The university released the following statement announcing the cancellation Thursday afternoon:

“Due to COVID-related protocols and after receiving guidance from our medical team, Sunday’s men’s basketball game scheduled to be played at Gonzaga has been canceled. The program will continue modified workouts and to receive consultation from the medical team about next steps as we work toward returning to full participation. This series is important to both schools and the administrations will begin working on an agreeable date for this game in Spokane next year.”

The Huskies have missed three games during the past two weeks due to COVID-19 protocols. Their Pac-12 opener against then-No. 11 Arizona, which was scheduled for last Thursday in Tucson, was postponed and has since been rescheduled for Jan. 25. What would have been their conference home opener against UCLA, which was scheduled for last Saturday, will not be made up and resulted in a forfeit.

UW has three remaining games scheduled in December, including nonconference meetings against Seattle U (Dec. 18) and Utah Valley (Dec. 21) and a trip to Pullman on Dec. 29 to play rival Washington State.
