Girls soccer primer: Top teams, players, predictions and storylines to watch in 2017

Puyallup – The Vikings return seven starters from last year’s team that won the league championship and lost just one regular-season game. Sophomore midfielder Meredith Udovich, sophomore forward Sydney Evans and senior midfielder Sunny Bieber give the Vikings weapons on offense, and senior defender Hallie Johnson anchors a defense that gave up just eight goals in the regular season in 2016.

Tahoma returns eight of its 11 starters from last year’s team that that finished second in the 4A NPSL Cascade. Their postseason dreams were dashed quickly with a 1-0 loss to Kentwood in districts, but with all that experience returning the Bears could be poised for a much deeper run this season.

Puyallup gave up just eight goals in the regular season a year ago and pitched nine shutouts in 16 games. In the playoffs, the Vikings gave up four goals in three games. If the Vikings are to live up to the lofty expectations placed upon them this year, they will need the defense to play like it did in the regular season a year ago and have that success carry over into the postseason.

Sumner has been to the state tournament nine consecutive seasons – four in 3A, four in 2A and last year in 4A. Streaks like this are rare, but even more rare to do it in so many different classifications. The Spartans return six of their 11 starters, but last year’s All-Area Player of the Year Jordan Thompson has graduated. Can the Spartans add another year to their streak?
