Prep roundup: Controversial call sends Auburn Adventist to triple-overtime win; Jeffrey Harn swimming strong for North Thurston

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Top Performer: Kaylee Schow, Tenino

Scored 25 points in 42-27 win over Three Rivers Christian

Auburn Adventist 43, Mount Rainier Lutheran 41 (3 OT): The game came down to a call in the final seconds of the third overtime.

“We got a technical at the end and they made both their free throws. The technical was for our head coach trying to ask about a certain foul that was one of our players,” Mount Rainier Lutheran assistant coach Jeankie Aczon said. “The referee told him to go back to the bench. Our coach turns around and says literally the word ‘yeah’ and that's when the technical called.”

The ending was a rough one for the Hawks who had already been struggling to stop the powerhouse of the Falcons’ Magnifique Niyonizeye who got all of her team’s points in the overtime and finished with 17 points in the game.

“I guess what we struggled with was keeping her (Niyonizeye) from driving to the hole,” Aczon said.

Even when Niyonizeye didn’t score on those drives she would hit the clutch free throws needed to put her team just narrowly ahead.

“The technical did not help at all,” Aczon said. “Had that technical not been called we would have gone to a fourth overtime.”

Isabella Foxley led Mount Rainier Lutheran with 14 points and Claire Lyons added 12.

Tenino 42, Three Rivers Christian 27: The Beavers came out strong and were able to secure a decisive win that saw Kaylee Schow leading the charge for the team.

Schow scored a game-high 25 points, including going 10-for-12 at the free throw line.

“She did a great job crashing the board hard and finishing under the basket,” Tenino coach Brandi Thomas said.

The closest scorer to Schow for Three Rivers Christian was Bailee Williams-Wallace who finished with 14 points. However, this was not enough to hold back the onslaught of offense in the first quarter, where the Beavers scored 19. They took a 28-16 lead into halftime.

“We really attacked them in the first quarter,” Thomas said. “I think everyone got some good minutes. I think it was a great opportunity for our young girls.

“They worked their tails off from start to finish.”

Willapa Valley 65, Northwest Christian 10: The Navigators struggled in this one, trailing 22-2 after the first quarter.

“We know we have to play better defense,” Northwest Christian coach Ron Collins said. “We know we have to work on our offensive plays.”

Britney Patrick led Willapa Valley with 17 points and Katie Adkins scored 15. Becca Sowers and MacKenzie Teigen each scored four points for Northwest Christian.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Top Performer: Adam Bailey, Mount Rainier Lutheran

33 points, 10 rebounds, 7 steals in 59-37 win over Auburn Adventist

CLASS 1B

Mount Rainier Lutheran 59, Auburn Adventist 37: It was a huge performance by Adam Bailey, who finished the night with a game-high 33 points, that gave the Hawks a big win over the Falcons.

And this came after earning WIAA athlete of the week honors last week.

“Adam had a strong last week and came out here and improved today,” Mount Rainier Lutheran coach Alexander Carter said. “He just does a tremendous amount of work for us.”

Bailey started off strong with 18 points first quarter out of the team’s initial 22 points. This came from how the team worked together and usually got him the ball to put it away.

“We moved the ball really well,” Carter said. “Of course Adam is at the end of it in most plays and just finishes it.”

On the flip side, the Hawks also got the stops when they need them in order to ensure the Falcons didn’t make a comeback.

“We played a really great team defense and caused a lot of turnovers and gave us an advantage,” Carter said. “We had a number of players with 4 or 5 steals. We had 24 steals total.”

Mount Rainier Lutheran (11-5; 7-2 2B SeaTac) remains a half-game back of Tacoma Baptist in the West division standings with four games remaining in the regular season.

CLASS 2B

Northwest Christian 54, Chief Leschi 48: Tyler Fox and Tony Dominguez went off against the Warriors, nearly outscoring their opponent on their own.

Fox led all scorers with 24 points and right behind him was Dominguez at 23. At the half, the Navigators were down 27-22. A monstrous third quarter helped them take the lead and hold it until the final buzzer.

Leading the Warriors was Kahea Baker and Christopher Whitford with 13 points each.

Boys Swimming

Top Performer: Jeffrey Harn, North Thurston

Harn won in four events, including state qualifying times in the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle in the 140-46 win over Shelton

North Thurston 140, Shelton 46: The Rams took all the events against the Highclimbers, thanks to a double state qualifying from Jeffrey Harn.

Harn qualified for state in the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle. The state standard in the 50 free requires a swimmer to hit the 22.40-second mark, and Harn made it by 0.05 seconds. And in the 100 free, Harn’s 46.68 time was almost a second ahead of the required 49.60.

He also placed first in two of the relays: the 200 medley and 400 freestyle. Both relay teams were made up of Harn, Justin Ridgeway, Ethan Donovan and Greg Wrinkle.

Gig Harbor 111, Peninsula 72: Jared Doris, Andrew Sexton, and Carson Eliasen were all three-time winners in the Tides win in the pool over the Seahawks.

Doris was a lock in most of the freestyle events as he took first place in the 50 free, 100 free and 200 free relay. Sexton was on the 200 free relay team and took the other 200 and 500 freestyle events as well.

Finally, Eliasen won in two medleys and a solo race. First was the 200 medley relay, then again in the 200 free with Doris, Sexton and Bass Barnes. Eliasen won on his own in the 100 breast.

Olympia 100, Rogers 76: The Bears won a narrow meet against the Rams thanks to three-event winner Adam Skjervold.

Skjervold won in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of one minute and 35.97 seconds, just over 3.5 seconds short of the state qualifying time of 1:32.30.

However, Skjervold took home two other single race titles as he came in first in the 200 medley relay and the 100 fly.
