Prep roundup: Anthony Grassi’s 29 points leads Clover Park, Lakes rallies behind Daeshawn Wayne; Peninsula outlasts Shelton in OT

BOYS BASKETBALL

Top performer: Anthony Grassi, Clover Park

Scored 29 points in win over River Ridge

Lakes 60, Stadium 56: The Lancers’ defense forced the Tigers to shoot from the outside and completely changed the game around in the second half.

Down 27-20 at the half, the Lancers were being beaten on the inside by the Tigers’ leading scorer Dylan Hartman and Mike Hankins.

“We were going inside to Hankins and Hartman, but then the offense stalled and we were launching three's,” said coach Eric Overgaard. “That gave Lakes a chance to get back into the game.”

Daeshawn Wayne was the leading Lancer in scoring as he hit a few clutch 3-pointers down the stretch, including the one that put Lakes ahead for good in the final minute.

Wayne would lead his team with 24 points. He now has 847 career points.

Rogers 60, Olympia 57: James Baker was the source of offense for the Rams as his 28 points helped lift his team over the Bears.

The Rams had their best offensive output in the second and third quarters as they scored 41 of the 60 points there. Whereas Olympia had a steady scoring through the game, it was those middle quarters that made the difference for the Rams.

Nikita Apansevich was the next closest Ram with 14 points. Andrew Lindsay led the Bears with 14 points and Lucas Bowser rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10.

Bonney Lake 46, Bethel 38: The Panthers win over the Braves puts them in control of the final seed out of the 3A PCL for districts.

Heading into the half leading 19-17, the Panthers continued to build their lead into the second half behind the play of Gavyn Tinsley, scoring a game-high 12 points.

Santiago Paz was the leading Braves scorer as he knocked down 10, but it was not enough.

Clover Park 79, River Ridge 60: The Warriors had three players hit double-digit scoring and two go above 20 points in their win over the Hawks.

Anthony Grassi led all scores as he put 29 points. Davien Harris Williams scored 22 and Jonathon Sealey scored 15 to supplement the Warriors.

Leading the way for the Hawks was Lamar Campbell scoring 20, and Marquan Cannon and Joebert Alexander combining for 30.

No. 2 Foss 95, White River 53: The Falcons rained the three-pointers against the Hornets as Micah Pollard and Kenzel Massey each scored over 20 points.

Pollard was the leading scorer with 27 points and Massey had 25 to boot. However, the Falcons drained 17 3-pointers against the Hornets.

They also played hard defense as no Hornet scored more than eight points in the game.

12 points, 20 rebounds and 5 blocks in 56-19 win over Forest Ridge

Wilson 51, Mount Tahoma 45: After scoring just 28 points in their most recent loss to Lincoln, Wilson coach Michelle Birge needed to take a step back.

Leading up to the game against the T-Birds, the Rams went back to the basics of basketball. The approach worked as they came away with the win, Wilson’s third win in the last four games.

“We definitely had the mindset to get back to basics tonight,” Birge said. “It's about doing that; locking down on defense and tonight was a great night doing both of those to get the win.”

Brooklyn Grant led all scorers with 23 points, and her Rams teammate Aaliyah Walker finished with 10. The T-Birds were led by senior captain Zyonna Fellows who finished with 14. Nini Figuracion chipped in with 12 points.

Mount Tahoma made a serious run in the fourth quarter (18-12), but it came up just short and suffered its second loss in the last three games.

“I think our girls did really well tonight,” Birge said. “We focused and did really well on the small things, and we shared the rock.”

Peninsula 62, Shelton 55 (OT): The Seahawks earned their third win in the last four games, but they had to go to overtime against the Highclimbers in order to get it.

Freshman guard Piper Bauer stepped up to lead Peninsula with 15 points, while junior guard Esther Pappuleas scored 13. Shelton, behind Kayla Gairns’ 21 points, went on a 23-13 run in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime.

In the extra period, the Seahawk defense held the Highclimbers to just three points.

Charles Wright Academy 36, Cascade Christian 30: The Tarrier just continue to find ways to win.

The win over the Cougars was the second straight game Charles Wright won by a close margin.

It was led by Grace Hanly, who finished with 14 points. Cascade Christian was led by Shelaine Lorenz with 17.

Auburn Mountainview 54, Enumclaw 39: The Lions have found their winning formula. With the win over the Hornets, they now have six in a row.

Taylor Flores led Auburn Mountainview with 14 points, Hayley Flores had 10, and Jenna Lacey also had 10 in the win. Jesslyn Huizenga led Enumclaw with eight points.

The loss brought the Hornet’s five-game winning streak to an end.
