High school volleyball: The News Tribune’s 2019 All-Area team

First- and second-team selections for The News Tribune’s 2019 All-Area volleyball team.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Hailey Brockway, Graham-Kapowsin, fr. — Won the 4A SPSL MVP at just 14 years old. Eagles’ freshman outside hitter was dominant all season long, racking up 578 kills, 246 digs and 62 blocks, leading Graham-Kapowsin to a first-place finish in the West Central III/Southwest bidistrict tournament and a third-place finish in the Class 4A state tournament.

COACH OF THE YEAR

Sara Russell and Maria Bahlenhorst, Tahoma — Co-head coaches led the Bears to a 23-1 record, first-place finish in the 4A NPSL Cascade and to the Class 4A state championship, where Tahoma topped Lake Stevens in the title game, 3-1. It was the program’s first state championship.

FIRST TEAM

Chey Jones, Tahoma, sr. — Boise State commit and NPSL Cascade MVP was a force for the 4A state champion Bears at outside hitter, totalling 473 kills (4.55/set), 299 digs (2.88/set), 57 blocks and 42 aces.

McKenna Peters, Tahoma, sr. — New Mexico State commit and libero was an NSPL Cascade first-team selection, with 522 digs (4.79/set) and 40 aces for the Class 4A state champions.

Chelsey Harmon, Rogers, sr. — 6-foot-2 middle blocker and University of Portland commit was an SPSL 4A first-team selection, racking up 64 blocks, 147 kills and a .354 hitting percentage.

Eliana Luteru, Washington, sr. — Right side/middle had 95 kills, 17 aces, 32 blocks and 89 assists for the Patriots and was the SPSL 2A East MVP, leading Washington to a third-place finish in the Class 2A state tournament.

Madi Brockway, Graham-Kapowsin, jr. — Libero and older sister of teammate Hailey was the heart of the Eagles’ defense, tallying 486 digs for Graham-Kapowsin.

Devyn Oestreich, Capital, jr. — Cougars’ outside hitter was the 3A SSC MVP after recording 270 kills, 220 digs, 55 service aces and 404 service returns. Holds the school career mark for aces with 146 with one season to go. Led Capital to a runner-up finish in the 3A state tournament.

Maia Nichols, Capital, sr. — Arizona State beach volleyball bound outside hitter had 306 kills and 237 digs for the Cougars and leaves the school with career-high marks for kills (1,169) and digs (1,026).

Ella Litterell, Emerald Ridge, sr. — SPSL 4A first-team outside hitter had 449 kills (3.9 per set), 231 digs (2 per set), 56 aces and 26 solo blocks. Led the Jaguars to sixth-place finish in the Class 4A state tournament.

Malelega Bartley, Emerald Ridge, sr. — 6-foot senior right side hitter and North Carolina A&T State commit racked up 481 kills (4.3 per set), 62 aces, 159 digs and 30 solo blocks.

Mia Hall, Stadium, sr. — Middle blocker was 3A PCL MVP, totaling 187 kills, 33 aces, 48 blocks and 64 digs for the Tigers.

Adele Holland, Puyallup, jr. — Vikings’ setter was among the state’s assist leaders, tallying 1,110 assists (9.7 per set). First-team SPSL 4A selection.

Kayla Skipworth, Curtis, sr. — Vikings’ outside hitter had 335 kills (3.9 per set), 59 aces, 11 blocks and 179 digs.

Camden Heilborn, Auburn Riverside, sr. — Western Washington commit and Riverside setter was the 4A NPSL Olympic co-MVP, racking up 123 kills, 36 aces, 57 blocks, 846 assists and 274 digs.
