Campbell hits key shots late to lift Sumner over Federal Way in 4A consolation, 66-60

All week, Sumner senior guard Lamar Campbell has been hitting big shots for the Spartans. Down the stretch in a Class 4A state tournament consolation game against Federal Way on Friday afternoon, Campbell hit two big shots after attacking the rim to give Sumner a four-point advantage late, which Sumner held onto for a 66-60 win.

“We’re always in attack mode, always trying to get good shots to get up the floor,” said Campbell, who scored 11 points.

The win sends Sumner to a fourth/six place game against 4A SPSL peer Olympia on Saturday, a familiar opponent.

Against Federal Way, both teams went on runs. Sumner kept its composure to hit key shots late in the game and get stops on defense.

“Be smart, try to take care of the ball and just attack, because they’re going to come at us just as hard,” Campbell said. “So we had to come at them with something, too.”

Nathan Voliva scored a team-high 16 points, Champ Spencer added 15 and Josh Lear scored 12 for the Spartans. Federal Way’s Peter Erickson scored a game-high 17 points in the losing effort, and Marcus Cole and Jaylen-Wes Williams added nine apiece.

Now Sumner gets a shot at a fourth-place finish tomorrow against Olympia, a team the Spartans beat in both meetings during the regular season. They say it’s hard to beat the same team three times.

“Just have to be smart, do what we did the first two times and limit our mistakes,” Campbell said.
