High school football roundup: Platt scores two touchdowns in Yelm win; Peninsula cruises behind Hinkle’s big night

South Sound football continued on Thursday night. Here’s a roundup of some of the Week 6 high school action:

YELM 29, GIG HARBOR 14

Brayden Platt ran over a low-tide Gig Harbor defense, and Yelm continued its undefeated season with a 29-14 victory on Thursday night.

Platt, the Tornados’ four-star recruit, averaged nearly six yards per tote on a 20-carry, 119-yard night. He scored a pair of touchdowns; one in the second quarter and one in the fourth.

Yelm held a 16-14 lead at halftime, but their defense shut out the Tides in the second half en route to their sixth win on the year.

The Tornados scored first when Ray Wright took the ball 25 yards for a rushing score in the first quarter.

In the second, Platt notched his first of two scores with an 11-yard rush. Gig Harbor answered after each of Yelm’s touchdowns when Blaze Herbert punched in a three-yard rush. Tides quarterback Will Landram found Parker Born for a 31-yard score before halftime.

By halftime, the Tides had cut the Tornado lead to two.

But Gig Harbor couldn’t score again.

Brayden and Logan Platt helped the Yelm defense put together a shutout defense showing in the second half.

Logan tackled nine, and Brayden added 8 tackles and a fumble recovery. Both sacked one and a half.

Offensively, Yelm quarterback Palaina Hooper hit Kyler Ronquillo for a 20-yard passing score in the third quarter. Platt scored his second rushing touchdown in the fourth.

PENINSULA 48, NORTH THURSTON 6

The Seahawks took control of the game early against the Rams as the offense was able to effectively spread the ball around and pile on the scoring early and lead Peninsula to their fifth win in a row.

Senior running back Josh Hinkle arguably had the biggest night for the Seahawks as he carried the ball eight times for 157 yards and two scores in the game. He also tacked on two receptions for 27 yards.

Senior quarterback Jake Bice continued to operate the high-flying offense as well, going 11-for-15 throwing the ball for 185 yards and a touchdown. The defense for the Seahawks got the job done as well, holding an option-heavy Rams offense scoreless for three quarters.

LINCOLN 44, BONNEY LAKE 0

It was just another day at the office for Lincoln quarterback Gabarri Johnson.

The Abes signal caller passed for 285 yards, and rushed for 110 in a 44-0 win over Bonney Lake on Thursday night. Johnson threw for five touchdowns, and added another on the ground.

Lincoln scored three times in the first quarter, all through the air. Johnson added a pair of passing scores in the second, and finished the half with five passing touchdowns.

Johnson’s rushing score came from the three-yard line in the third. They’d add a 20-yard field goal in the fourth, extending their lead to 44-0.

Meanwhile, Bonney Lake’s offense struggled against the Abes defense, compiling just 24 rushing yards. Panthers quarterback completed 11 of 28 passes for 134 yards, but threw three interceptions to Abes defenders.

Brandon Ervin Jr., Jasiah Swansey, and Deonjae Ervin each intercepted a pass for Lincoln.

SUMNER 52, CURTIS 6

Bo Carlson’s three touchdowns in the second quarter were more than enough for the Spartans to topple the Curtis Vikings on Friday night.

Sumner took a 28-0 lead into the locker room at halftime, and the Spartans padded their lead from then on, including a 54-yard field goal from Spartan kicker Wyatt Redding.

Curtis’ touchdown as time expired erased a shutout, but Sumner had finished off a 52-6 win.

Carlson had five total touchdowns, three through the air and two on the ground. In the second quarter, he punched in a pair of rushing touchdowns from seven and three yards, and found Matthew Spurbeck for a 22-yard passing score before halftime.

Bryce Tannehill put Sumner on the board first with an opening-quarter, four-yard touchdown rush.

In the third, Eric Buck added to the Spartan lead on a 10-yard touchdown run. Carlson added to his passing total with a 50-yard passing score to Isaiah Watkins, and Redding’s 54-yard kick later in the quarter extended their lead to 45.

Carlson found Spurbeck again in the fourth on a 39-yard touchdown pass, and Curtis’ last-second touchdown as time expired put the Vikings on the board; no PAT was attempted.

The Sumner defense intercepted three Curtis passes in Friday night’s win.

LAKES 30, JUANITA 27

Lakes and Juanita traded blows, but when the whistles blew, the Lancers were deemed victors.

When Lakes quarterback Justin Brennan found Kimarree Washington for a 39-yard passing score in the fourth quarter, the Lancers extended their lead to 10, and the Ravens couldn’t make up the ground.

Both teams scored a touchdown in the first, and an eight-point score from Lakes outpaced Juanita’s pair of field goals in the second.

Juanita scored the first touchdown of the game when Emanuel Cody caught a 16-yard ball from Logan Johnson. Lakes responded when Brennan kept the ball for a three-yard rushing score.

Leo Pulalasi gave Lakes their first lead of the game on a 47-yard pass from Brennan, and the Lancers converted for two. The Ravens found the red zone on separate second-quarter possessions, but settled for field goals that cut Lakes’ halftime lead to two.

Juanita regained the lead in the third quarter, when Ellis Nelson took a 30-yard scoop-and-score fumble recovery to the house.

But once again, Lakes answered. Chayanne Fonoti-Savea punched in a four-yard rush for a score, and converted another two-point conversion.

Washington’s 39-yard touchdown catch in the fourth put Lakes ahead by 10. Juanita’s Logan Johnson found Carson Zapata for a 15-yard touchdown pass in the closing minutes, but a double-digit deficit was too great to overcome.

EATONVILLE 35, MONTESANO 18

Quarterback Kevin Wulff passed for a touchdown — and ran for another — as Eatonville cruised to a 35-18 win over Montesano on Friday night.

Even though Montesano drew first blood, Blain Hanly dashed for a nine-yard rushing score that put the Cruisers in front, 7-6.

In the second, Wulff found Jakob Lucht for a 29-yard touchdown pass, extending the Eatonville lead to 14-6 at halftime.

In the third, Jake Wood’s one-yard scoring rush padded the Cruiser lead. Montesano responded with a touchdown, but a six-yard keeper score from Wulff erased any progress made in a comeback effort.

Job Kralik’s 80-yard pick six for Eatonville in the opening minutes of the fourth made that goal even tougher.

Montesano would score with five minutes remaining in the game — and recover the ensuing onside kick — but Eatonville’s defense retained their 17-point advantage until the final whistles.

The Cruisers remain undefeated, now at 6-0 on the season.

KENTWOOD 24, TAHOMA 21

Senior kicker Thomas Allam is the hero for the Conquerors in their win over the Bears as a second-half comeback is what put them over the top.

Trailing 14-21 heading into the second half, the Conquerors scored on a rushing touchdown, and Allam’s made extra point tied it up. The Bears’ offense was stifled by the Conquerors and they couldn’t find the end zone in the entire second half.

It wasn’t until less than a minute in the fourth quarter that the Conquerors were able to move into Allam’s kicking range. A good snap and hold later, the ball goes through the uprights sealing the win for Allam and the Conquerors.

PUYALLUP 54, OLYMPIA 14

The Vikings’ offense found their rhythm early and often as they hung 34 points on the Bears in the first quarter alone. Junior running back Ryan Cramer was one of the biggest contributors to this offensive explosion.

Cramer punched in the first of his three touchdowns of the opening quarter from about eight yards out and the Vikings were off to the races. After the Vikings scored about 21 more points, the senior found a hole and took the ball for 72 yards to close out the quarter the same way Cramer opened it: with a rushing touchdown.

Cramer would finish the night with 173 yards on 11 carries and a total of four total touchdowns. He was joined by senior running back Ziere Ford in the big rushing night with 128 yards on eight carries and a touchdown.

Junior Micah Balzarini continued his mastery of the Vikings’ offense in the game as well by distributing the ball evenly and throwing for two touchdown passes in the match-up. He finished the night going 13-for-18, 183 yards and the aforementioned TD passes.
