Girls soccer roundup: Sumner’s Martinson nets game-winning goal, clinches state spot
SUMNER 1, KENNEDY CATHOLIC 0
Payton Martinson’s late-game goal sealed a 1-0 Sumner win and clinched a spot in the state tournament on Saturday morning.
In the 78th minute, Martinson found the back of the net from 30 yards away on an unassisted goal. Goalkeeper Kaitlyn Gresham earned the shutout for the Spartans.
The Spartans finished their regular season at 8-1-4 in the 4A SPSL. They haven’t lost since a 3-1 loss at Curtis on Sep. 28.
Sumner takes on Olympia on Nov. 2 at Curtis High School.
CAMAS 2, CURTIS 0
It was tough sledding for the Curtis Vikings on the road on Saturday afternoon against Camas, losing 2-0 to the Papermakers. Camas scored a pair of goals in the game’s final 10 minutes, from Bella Burns and Parker Mairs, reported Tim Martinez of The Columbian.
Curtis will face Mount Rainier from the 4A North Puget Sound League in a loser-out game at Ingersoll Stadium in Olympia on Nov. 2 at 5 p.m.
STADIUM 1, THOMAS JEFFERSON 0
It took 77 minutes, but Analise Rose’s last-minute goal propelled Stadium over Thomas Jefferson on Saturday afternoon.
Rose’s goal came on an assist from Brooklyn Lee.
Stadium faces Central Kitsap next, in a Nov. 2 meeting in Federal Way.
TIMBERLINE 3, SILAS 0
Timberline’s offense netted three goals, and the Blazer defense blanked Silas in a 3-0 win on Saturday afternoon.
Trinitee Robertson, Lindsey Crowe, and Celey Allsup all scored for Timberline. The Blazers are winners of six of their last seven.
Up next? The Blazers face Bonney Lake in a Nov. 2 matchup at Harry Lang Stadium in Lakewood.
OLYMPIA 1, TAHOMA 0
Olympia took down Tahoma, but neither team scored in their opponent’s net.
A second-minute blunder on a Tahoma cross deflected off of a defender, and resulted in an own goal. That gave Olympia a near-immediate advantage, and they held on for a 1-0 win on Saturday afternoon.
Olympia moved to 11-5-1 overall; they face Sumner next on Nov. 2 at Curtis High School.
Tahoma’s loss puts them in a loser-out game in the District 3/4 4A Tournament. They’ll take on the winner of Saturday night’s contest between Skyview and Rogers on Nov. 2 at French Field.
PENINSULA 3, MOUNTAIN VIEW 2
Peninsula scored a trio of first-half goals, and the Seahawks held on for a 3-2 win over Mountain View on Saturday afternoon.
Mountain View drew first blood, but Caitlin Laakso answered for the Seahawks with a goal off of a free kick in the 13th minute.
Seven minutes later, Sinead Duffy found the back of the net to put Peninsula in front, 2-1. In the 40th minute, Janae Lewis scored another Peninsula goal off of a throw in.
At halftime, Peninsula led by two. But their defense allowed only one goal in the second half, keeping their season alive.
The Seahawks take on the loser of Saturday’s Kentlake/Gig Harbor matchup at Harry Lang Stadium on Nov. 2.
GIG HARBOR 9, KENTLAKE 0
The Tides scored nine goals on Saturday night -- from eight different players.
By halftime, Gig Harbor led by five, and the Tides rolled for a 9-0 rout over Kentlake.
Josie Stanley scored the game’s first goal. That’d be enough to secure a win, as Tides keeper Morgan Weaver earned the shutout.
But Gig Harbor scored eight more times. Ella Hatteberg scored next, and Sophie Blake followed with a score soon after. Elise Miller and Lily Paulson also scored before the intermission.
In the second half, Hailey Burris found the back of the net to give the Tides a 6-0 advantage, and assisted Alexa Thoms on the first of back-to-back goals immediately after.
Before the final whistles, Sarah Ehler scored Gig Harbor’s ninth goal.
Kentlake plays Peninsula in a loser-out game on Nov. 2 at Harry Lang Stadium in Lakewood. Gig Harbor moves on to a matchup with Kelso on the same date.
