High school girls soccer state roundup: Lowney’s last-gasp goal in the first half propels Puyallup over Kamiakin

QUARTERFINALS

RICHALND 1 (4), PUYALLUP 1 (3)

Two halves and two overtime periods were not enough to decide the winner between the Vikings and Bombers. Unfortunately for the defending state champions, they couldn’t net enough penalty kicks to advance to the 4A state semifinals.

The Vikings’ lone goal was set up off a corner kick from senior Ally Beavers to Callie Lowney at the 18th minute of the match. The game remained scoreless despite the Vikings’ constant pressure until halftime.

The Bombers got past senior keeper Ally Larkin in the 67th minute with the equalizer and kept it tied through two overtime periods. Despite having a 3-2 lead in penalty kicks, a miss off the bar and a save by Richalnd did the Vikings in. They lost 4-3 on kicks.

The Bombers advance to the semifinals where they will meet Issaquah at 6 p.m. Friday, November 19 at Sparks Stadium.

ARCHBISHOP MURPHY 5, TUMWATER 0

The scoring started early for the Wildcats as they kept up the pressure against the T-Birds and capitalized on the bits of bad luck Tumwater had.

An early own-goal by the T-Birds gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead and they did not relent on their attacking pressure. It took Tumwater some time to get their heads back in the game but they had no answer when it came to winning the ball in the air.

Three separate times, the Wildcats had a set-piece where they knocked in a goal off a header. They moved the ball very well against the T-birds and consistently found themselves in scoring situations. With the victory, Archbishop Murphy will move onto the semifinals and play Columbia River at 8 p.m. Friday, November 19 at Shoreline Stadium.

GIG HARBOR 2, SNOHOMISH 0

The top-seeded Tides are two wins away from a state title.

Less than 24 hours after a first-round win over Bonney Lake in the 3A state tournament, Gig Harbor took down Snohomish in the quarterfinals, 2-0.

It’s a place the Tides have been before. They’ve qualified for state in each of the last four tournaments, and in 2018, won it all over Holy Names Academy.

Now, No. 13 Seattle Prep stands in the way of a state championship appearance, a match that kicks off at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup on Nov. 19.

Elise Miller netted Gig Harbor’s first goal Saturday in the 20th minute, and Ashley Wright added an insurance score in the 60th minute.

Morgan Weaver earned a shutout for the Tides.

COLUMBIA RIVER 2, FIFE 1

Until the very last few seconds of the match, the Rapids and Trojans were tied at one goal a piece. Right before the end of the first half, the Rapids netted a goal off a free kick from junior Ava Lapinskas. Feeling the momentum swing towards Columbia River, Fife coach Ryann Waldman told her players that they need to play the toughest half they can to come back and win.

And they did exactly that as Fife’s answer came early in the second half when senior Maya Knautz knocked in the equalizer for the Trojans. Both teams moved the ball deep into each other’s half of the pitch, but could not capitalize on any shot taken.

Within the very last few seconds before a possible overtime, Lapinskas again floated the ball for another Rapids goal that would put the Trojans out of the playoffs.

Even though the Trojans left everything they had out on the pitch, it will be the Rapids who advance to play Archbishop Murphy at 8 p.m. Friday, November 19 at Shoreline Stadium.

ROUND OF 16

BELLEVUE 5, CAPITAL 0

With the Cougars accomplishing their goals of being in the top three of the 3A South Sound Conference, districts, and making it to state, it clearly shows that it has been a successful year for the program.

Unfortunately, it was untimely errors on the pitch that ended their season at the hands of the Wolverines. Despite there not being any spectacular plays that the Wolverines were running against the Cougars, Bellevue just capitalized on the mistakes Capital made.

The Wolverines will advance to play in the semi-finals against Seattle Prep at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 13 at Auburn Memorial Stadium.

GIG HARBOR 3, BONNEY LAKE 1

Despite an early goal from the Panthers, the Tides showed why they are the number one team in the state with three unanswered goals of their own.

The scoring began in the first half with seniors Ashley Wright and Ella Hatteberg both putting the ball in the back of the net. Senior Alexa Thoms got the insurance goal in the second half as the Tides’ defense shut down the Panthers.

The Tides’ defense swarmed the Panther and played within their game plan. They played aggressively to the ball, taking it away whether the ball was in the air or on the ground and they won as many possessions as they could.

With the victory, the Tides advance to play Snohomish at 5 p.m. Saturday, November 13 at Roy Anderson Field.

SEATTLE PREP 2, AUBURN RIVERSIDE 1

The physicality between both the Panthers and Ravens made it hard for either team to make any substantial offensive moves. However, a late first-half corner kick that bounced off the Ravens made it 1-0 at the half in favor of Seattle Prep.

About midway through the second half, sophomore Kiera Heim lasered in the Panther’s second goal to give them a 2-0 lead. Although the Ravens’ offense kept pushing, their only score came late in stoppage time when sophomore Ava Morton launched a corner kick for sophomore Ava Berry to knock in.

With the Ravens eliminated, the Panthers will move on to play Bellevue in the next round of the playoffs at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 13 at Auburn Memorial Stadium.

HOLY NAMES 3, PENINSULA 0

Although they kept it close in the first half, the Seahawks were mired with injuries and just could not pull it out against the Cougars.

Already playing without their two best goal scorers, the Seahawks senior keeper Paige Broadrick went down in the second half as well. And even though they battled, the Cougars netted two more goals and put the Seahawks out of the playoffs.

With the win, the Cougars will advance and play against Shorewood at 3 p.m. Saturday, November 13 at the Interbay Athletic Complex.

SHOREWOOD 5, LAKES 3

The T-Birds outmuscled the Lancers as they saw the last two goals for senior Phoenix Schumacher’s career hit the back of the net.

Even though they were prepared for how good the T-Bird’s midfield was going to be, they just got exhausted and found their attack difficult to stop. Schumacher’s goals came at some point in the first half and in stoppage time in the second half. The other scorer for the Lancers was freshman Grace Hanna.

Shorewood will advance to the 3A quarterfinals and tackle Holy Names Academy at 3 p.m. Saturday, November 13 at the Interbay Athletic Complex.

FIRST ROUND

PUYALLUP 2, KAMIAKIN 0

The referees were seconds from signaling the end of the first half, but Callie Lowney had other plans.

On what coach Matt White called a “beautiful culmination play,” The News Tribune’s defending all-area girls soccer player of the year found a pass from Ally Beavers and netted a stoppage-time goal that propelled the Vikings to a 1-0 lead at the intermission.

Puyallup scored again in the second half, this time on a shot from Chloe Robertson, and silenced Kamiakin for a first-round win in the 4A state tournament.

“We have a phrase on our squad, which is ‘don’t be the dope,’” White said regarding Lowney’s last-second goal. “Don’t be the dope who’s sitting there hoping it’s over, waiting for it to be done. … (It was a) great counter, nice passing.

“If you’re Kamiakin… that’d be a really hard halftime for that coach.”

And the Braves found little success offensively, taking no shots on Puyallup’s goal from within 20 yards.

The Vikings move on to a Saturday matchup with Richland, with a trip to the state semifinals on the line.

TUMWATER 3, SELAH 2

The T-Bird offense got off to a hot start against the Vikings and the defense held their end of the bargain in the first round of the 2A state finals.

Scoring three goals within the first 15 minutes of the match, the T-Birds set an early tone that the Vikings had no answer for. Five minutes in, senior Ainsley Wall bombed the ball about 30 yards to give them their first score.

Four minutes later, Wall would score again off a penalty kick to put the T-Birds up 2-0. Wall did not get the hat trick, however, as freshman Emalyn Shaffer scored the third goal at the 15-minute mark. The Vikings’ junior Allison Moultray finished out the first-half scoring in the 32nd minute to make the score 3-1.

The Vikings’ next goal came in stoppage time, but it would not be enough. The #9 T-Birds move on to the 2A quarterfinals and will challenge No. 1 Archbishop Murphy at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 13 at Archbishop Murphy High School.

RIDGEFIELD 2, ENUMCLAW 0

Ridgefield scored two first-half goals and silenced the Enumclaw offense for a first-round win in the 2A state tournament on Wednesday night.

The Spudders drew first blood when Paytn Barnette cashed in after a corner kick and subsequent scrum in the 23rd minute.

And moments before intermission, Ridgefield extended their lead when Claire Jones fired a shot beyond the reach of Enumclaw keeper Megan Madill.

Ridgefield took a 15-4 record into the tournament, good for third in the state bracket. They’ll host the winner of a meeting between Ellensburg and West Valley of Spokane in the quarterfinals.

CAMAS 2, KENNEDY CATHOLIC 0

The Lancers played the Papermakers tough in the first half, keeping the game to a 0-0 tie. However, Camas started the scoring early on to earn their trip to the quarter-finals.

In the 46th minute, junior Bella Burns scored on a long cross pass from Anna Mooney to break the scoreless tie. For insurance in the 55th minute, senior Emerson Grafton punched in a goal from the assist of Mooney.

Camas moves on as the #1 seed in the 4A state tournament and will take on #8 West Valley of Yakima at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 13 at Doc Harris Stadium in Camas.

EASTLAKE 2, CURTIS 1

In some sports, the saying is “it’s a game of inches.” Well, the Vikings certainly felt that in their loss to the Wolves in the opening round of the 4A state playoffs.

Although they netted a goal in the 75th minute from sophomore Enya Niebergall, it was not enough to overcome the two goals the Wolves already scored. However, the Vikings came very close.

Not once but three times they hit the post, bouncing away would-be goals for the Vikings. Even at the end of the match, they set up a corner kick that could’ve sent it to overtime. But luck wouldn’t have it.

The #3 Wolves advance and will play #6 Issaquah in the quarterfinals at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 13 at Eastlake High School.

RICHLAND 3, SUMNER 1

The Spartans gave the Spudders a run for their money in their match up in the 4A state tournament. In fact, they had the #2 team in the state down 1-0 at the half thanks to a 24’ goal from sophomore Sydney Garonzik.

Unfortunately, the Spudders would take over the second half by scoring three unanswered goals that ultimately took the game from the Spartans. Ridgefield showed why they are the second seed in the state as they played with poise and were not flustered at all.

However, for a team that only had six players with any playoff experience, Sumner surprised a talented Ridgefield squad. The future looks bright for the Spartans as they will more than likely return their underclassmen and continue to build playoff experience.

The Spudders move on to play #7 Puyallup in the quarterfinals.

PENINSULA 3, CHENEY 2

It has been some time, but the Seahawks are moving on in the 3A state finals with their win over the Blackhawks.

Senior Sinead Duffy knocked in two goals for the Seahawks, her first on a senior Caitlin Laakso assist in the 5th minute, and again unassisted in the 13th minute. Probably the most crucial goal for the Seahawks came in the 19th minute from junior Ryan Quilio.

Quilio picked a heck of a time to score her first-ever varsity goal as it was the third for the Seahawks, and one the Blackhawks couldn’t overcome. Although they scored in the 10th minute and in stoppage at the end of the first half, the Seahawk defense prevented any more scoring.

Peninsula’s next game will be a tough one as they travel to take on #2 Holy Names Academy at 5 p.m. Friday, November 12 at the Southwest Athletic Complex in Seattle.

COLUMBIA RIVER 2, WHITE RIVER 1

After a scoreless first half, Columbia River netted a pair of second-half goals to topple White River and advance in the 2A state tournament on Wednesday night.

The Rapids scored first when Anna Iniguez cut through White River defenders for a one-on-one shot on the 50th minute.

But Columbia River’s lead wouldn’t last long.

Three minutes later, White River’s Claire Carter answered with an equalizing goal.

A penalty kick off the foot of Andie Buckley in the 74th minute put the Rapids back in front.

Columbia River, seeded 12th, travels to No. 5 Fife for a quarterfinal matchup in the 2A bracket.

SKYLINE 2, OLYMPIA 0

Olympia’s run in the WCD 3/4 4A tournament ended in the title game last week, but hopes of a state championship ended in the first round after a 2-0 loss to Skyline on Wednesday night.

The fourth-seeded Spartans move on to a matchup with No. 12 Glaicer Peak in the state quarterfinals.
