Scouting report: This is the first time in a decade a high school recruiting class has not featured a five-star quarterback from the West. In the 2021 class, five-star talent Sam Huard (signed with hometown UW) posted record-breaking numbers and became one of the nation’s top recruits. The year before that, the region sent three five-star passers in California’s Bryce Young (Alabama) — who won the Heisman Trophy last season — D.J. Uiagaleli (Clemson) and C.J. Stroud (Ohio State) to Power Five programs. The 2019 class included Arizona’s Spencer Rattler (Oklahoma), while the 2018 class included California’s J.T. Daniels (USC), the 2017 class Hawaii’s Tua Tagovailoa (Alabama), the 2016 class Washington’s Jacob Eason (Georgia), the 2015 class California’s Josh Rosen (UCLA) and Blake Barnett (Alabama), the 2014 class Arizona’s Kyle Allen (Texas A&M) and the 2013 class Washington’s Max Browne (USC). That impressive run of five-star passers from the West might end here, but this class has its share of notable four-star recruits. … Brown, Houser, Johnson and Murphy were each Elite 11 finalists, while Brown, Martin and Denegal were each named to All-American Bowl rosters. … Brown is the consensus top quarterback in the region, topping 247Sports.com, Rivals and ESPN’s passer ratings in the West, the only consensus top-10 passer nationally in the group and one of the top signees in an Ohio State class that tops the Big Ten and ranks fourth in the nation. After playing his first three seasons at Queen Creek (Arizona), he became Utah’s top quarterback in his one year at Corner Canyon, passing for a state-leading 4,881 yards and 57 touchdowns — which ranked fourth and tied for fourth among MaxPreps national stat leaders. … California accounts for much of the depth in this group, but there’s no consensus on who the state’s top passing recruit is. Murphy — who joins a Texas class that leads the Big 12 and ranks fifth nationally, and threw for 2,973 yards and 22 touchdowns as a senior in guiding Junipero Serra to a Division 1-A state title — tops the list for both 247Sports and Rivals, while ESPN lists Johnson as California’s top recruit at the position. Johnson and Martin are the only two in the group heading to the Pac-12, and Martin is the only California passer in the group remaining in state. … Marchiol was the Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year after passing for a school-record 2,960 yards as a senior and tossing 37 touchdowns. He threw for 8,310 yards and 91 touchdowns, and rushed for 1,301 yards and 24 more scores between Regis Jesuit (Colorado) and Hamilton during his career. … Wood turned heads by wrapping up his high school career with a thrilling win over Georgia’s Collins Hill in the GEICO State Champions Bowl Series, during which he threw for 278 yards and four touchdowns while also leading the Eagles with 85 rushing yards. With the win, the Class 4A state champions from Washington ended the season ranked 11th in the nation by MaxPreps. Wood was the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year after leading the Eagles on their undefeated run last fall and throwing for 2,500 yards, rushing for 620 more and scoring 45 total touchdowns. He never lost a game in his two seasons as a starter, finishing 20-0..

Signed to: Oklahoma
Lucky Sutton, 6-1/205, San Diego, California (Cathedral Catholic)
Committed to: San Diego State
Scouting report: Much like past seasons, this is a small group, considering offensive styles in the West tend to produce more pass catchers, but there is certainly talent at the top end. Brown is considered a five-star recruit by Rivals and the top running back in the West by both Rivals and 247Sports and will offer speed and versatility to USC, which lists him as an athlete. He rushed for 4,174 yards in his career at Mater Dei, added another 1,600 receiving yards and scored in all three phases to finish with 74 total touchdowns. A former Oklahoma commit, the MaxPreps All-American opted to stay in Southern California when Lincoln Riley took over USC’s program. … While Brown is staying in the West, two more of the region’s top running backs in Barnes and Sawchuk are both departing for Oklahoma. There, both will play for former Sooners star DeMarco Murray — a former five-star recruit and Nevada’s top player back in 2006 — who has been coaching running backs at the college level since 2019 following a seven-year NFL career. … ESPN’s top running back in the West and the consensus top player in Colorado, Sawchuk led the state in rushing with 2,004 yards and 28 touchdowns in his final seasons. He finished with 5,724 rushing yards and 77 scores in his career and is the first player to win Colorado’s Gatorade Player of the Year award in consecutive seasons (2020, 2021) since current Carolina Panthers star running back Christian McCaffrey (2012, 2013). … Luke was named the All-American Bowl MVP after scoring a pair of touchdowns — one rushing, one receiving — at the annual game and announced he was joining Arizona’s stellar class the same day. Known for his speed, Luke set a school record (10.55 seconds) in the 100-meter dash when he was a freshman in 2019 — which was also the top time in the race for any freshman in California that year, and a top-three mark nationally among ninth-graders. … Ott is the top-ranked recruit in Cal’s class. … Sutton led the state of California in rushing last fall, per MaxPreps, finishing with 2,628 yards and 36 touchdowns — which averaged out to a stunning 202.2 yards per game and 11.3 per carry. … Brown, Luke and Sawchuk were each All-American Bowl picks.

C.J. Williams, 6-2/195, Santa Ana, California (Mater Dei)

Scouting report: Arizona may have finished the 2021 season at the bottom of the Pac-12 standings, but the future seems much brighter after the Wildcats picked up their share of wins on the recruiting trail. McMillan, considered a five-star talent by Rivals, headlines the loaded class — which currently includes 22 high school signees — and is the highest-rated recruit in Arizona’s program history. Rivals ranks McMillan as both the top player in California and the West in the 2022 class and the top receiver in the West by 247Sports, and he also picked up the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year honors after tallying 1,302 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns, while also collecting 35 tackles and eight interceptions — two returned for touchdowns — as a defensive back last fall. He was named a MaxPreps All-American as an all-purpose player. A three-sport athlete, McMillan has also played volleyball and basketball during high school. He’s one of four players from Servite to sign with Arizona, joining quarterback Noah Fifita, tight end Keyan Burnett and linebacker Jacob Manu. … Williams is considered the West’s top receiver by ESPN, and led the nation’s top-ranked team in receiving with 830 yards and 12 touchdowns last fall. … McMillan (No. 4), Williams (No. 9) and Grayes (No. 10) are all ranked top-10 receivers nationally by 247Sports. But, the talented class doesn’t end there. Six states in the West produced a four-star receiver this season, and five of the receivers in this group — McMillan, Williams, Grayes, Merriweather and Clemons — earned All-American Bowl honors. … Both Merriweather and Clemons — the consensus top recruit in Oregon who finished with more than 800 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns — are also members of TNT’s 2022 Northwest Nuggets class. … The Gatorade Players of the Year from both Nevada and Utah are also in this receivers group in Bernard and Hagen. Bernard racked up 2,065 all-purpose yards and 20 total touchdowns last fall. He initially signed with UW as the Huskies’ top recruit at the time, but departed the class after wide receivers coach Junior Adams headed to Oregon. Bernard enrolled at Michigan State not long after, where he reunites with a former high school teammate in quarterback Katin Houser, who he played alongside on Liberty’s state championship team in 2019. Hagen led the West in receiving in the fall, per MaxPreps, with his 1,805 yards — which also ranked in the top five nationally — and 23 touchdowns. He finished his career with 3,927 receiving yards and 51 scores. The top recruit in BYU’s class is also a top sprinter in Utah, with a career-best time of 10.52 seconds in the 100. He is a reigning state champion in both the 100 and 200.

Scouting report: Which four-star tight end is the best in the West this year? The rankings vary. 247Sports has Burnett as the region’s top recruit at the position, while Otton tops the list for Rivals and Pedersen for ESPN. Perhaps more importantly for the region — most of the top tight ends are staying in the Pac-12. … Arizona landed Burnett, a former USC commit, who will reunite with three Servite teammates from this class there. Burnett’s father, Chester, formerly played linebacker for the Wildcats. … After continuing his family football legacy at Tumwater the past four seasons, Otton, an All-American Bowl pick, will continue it again at UW. The Huskies’ top recruit in this class is also the younger brother of Cade Otton, a former All-Pac-12 tight end for the program who is headed to the NFL Draft. … UCLA snagged two of the region’s top tight ends in Pedersen and Ryan. … Loveland, the consensus top recruit in Idaho, heads to the Big Ten following a record-setting high school career during which he collected 3,493 all-purpose yards and scored 39 touchdowns. Scouting report: This year’s group is stacked with talent and depth — at the interior spots and at the tackles — with six states producing offensive linemen with at least one four-star evaluation. … Washington has a deep class, headlined by the state’s top recruit in five-star offensive tackle Conerly, who is considered both the top recruit in the West and the top tackle nationally by 247Sports. The site also lists him as the No. 8 player overall in the nation, and he remains one of the top uncommitted recruits in the 2022 class. He is not expected to make a decision on National Signing Day, but has narrowed his choices to six Power Five destinations. Washington has four more top linemen in the Puget Sound area in this class, including two who will continue their football careers in Texas in Agbo and Nabou. Two from the 4A South Puget Sound League are set to announce on National Signing Day in Ioane (previously committed to UW), who anchored the offensive line on Graham-Kapowsin’s state championship team, and Iuli (previously committed to Oregon), who is ranked as the top offensive guard in the West by ESPN. Agbo, Conerly and Iuli are also members of TNT’s 2022 Northwest Nuggets class. … Reigning FBS champion Georgia is getting a versatile offensive lineman in Greene, who is the top recruit at the position in the Bulldogs’ class, which ranks third nationally. The MaxPreps All-American is considered the top offensive guard in the West by both 247Sports and Rivals. While Greene is headed to the SEC, four of the top five offensive linemen in California are remaining on the West Coast, with Yoon staying close to home at UCLA, Brown staying in the Bay Area at Cal, and the Sierra Canyon duo of Swanson and Wooten heading north to Stanford and Oregon. … Conerly, Fitzpatrick, Greene and Taylor each earned All-American Bowl selections.

Lucas and Swanson are bound for the Big 12, Kanu and Graham for the Big Ten and Moa for BYU, while Halton — who is listed as the top defensive end in the West by ESPN — is expected to announce his commitment on National Signing Day, with Miami, Oklahoma and Oregon (where he was previously committed) in the running. … Lucas, considered a five-star recruit by 247Sports, is the consensus top prospect in Arizona and joins a loaded Texas A&M class that tops the national rankings. This group also includes the top recruit in Miami’s signing class, Stanford’s, Utah’s and Boise State’s. And beyond that, there’s also certainly depth in the West here — 13 of the players in this group have at least one four-star rating. … Bailey, a MaxPreps All-American, is the headliner of a Stanford class that topped the Pac-12 during this high school recruiting cycle, and considered the top edge rusher in the West by 247Sports, while Rivals lists him as the region’s top outside linebacker. … Moss is both the top-ranked recruit in Nevada by 247Sports and ESPN, and the highest-rated recruit in Mario Cristobal’s incoming class at Miami. Scouting report: There is no shortage of talent in the West in the secondary this year. This group features the only consensus five-star recruit in the region in this class in Jackson, who is considered the No. 8 player nationally and the top recruit in the West by ESPN, as well as the top prospect in California by both ESPN and 247Sports, and consensus top cornerback. The speedy defensive back — he tied a state sprinting record by running a 10.25 in the 100 last spring — is also USC’s top high school recruit in the 2022 class, picking the program over Alabama. USC landed three prospects from the Mater Dei team that won California’s Open Division title and finished the season atop the MaxPreps national rankings, signing Jackson, running back Raleek Brown and wide receiver C.J. Williams. Jackson missed most of his final high school season with a knee injury. … The other 13 defensive backs in this group are all considered four-star recruits by multiple outlets, and most of them are staying close by in the Pac-12. And Mater Dei’s players won’t be the only teammates reuniting in college. Bishop Gorman cornerback Ross and safety Branch also both signed with the Trojans, while the Lincoln cornerback duo of Jahlil Florence and Jalil Tucker will both be Ducks after Florence joined the class just ahead of National Signing Day. … Williams and Dunn are both staying close to home in the Pacific Northwest, with the Portland safety joining the Ducks in Eugene and the Sumner safety — who was the highest-ranked recruit in Arizona State’s class before flipping his commitment to UW ahead of National Signing Day — heading to Seattle. … Berry is considered the top safety in the West by 247Sports after collective 25 tackles, three sacks and an interception in his final high school season, while also playing offense. Branch is the highest-ranked safety in the West by both Rivals and ESPN, and finished with 42 tackles, including two for losses and seven deflections as a senior. … Berry, Tucker, Turner-Gooden and Williams were All-American Bowl selections.
